My son is located in a federal facility app. 1200 + miles from me. He has been there since April with no visitors. Are there any groups that may visit inmates when family members are unable to visit? His appeal is forthcoming this week, if it is denied, then we will need help in filing 2255's. We are short of money, so we are looking for groups to help do research and/or aid in writing. I forgot to mention..my son is a victim of the drug war and the mandatory minimums. All suggestions will be accepted with graditude.

Thanks Pam for replying. I forgot to say that he is located at FCI Waseca in MN.

Where did his sentence take place? Was it in MN or Texas? The other thing we can find out is if Texas has an interstate agreement with MN. If so, I can help you look into transfering him to a prison in Texas. I'd just wonder though if the conditions are better in MN? Are they just filing the appeal or is it about ready for review? If they are just filing it, it can take up to a year before anything is decided...maybe longer, but not usually.

He was sentenced in Texas and sent to MN. He said he might become eligible for a transfer to Texas Federal Facility in October. I am sure the facility in MN is better but he misses us and we miss him. He wants to be nearer so we can visit. If he is not nearer in December, I will find a way to see him in MN. The appeal briefs are due August 7 to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Thanks for your replies.

If he's eligible in October, you should get in contact with the department that handles these transfers. He will have a case manager for this. You can call the DOC there in Texas and ask who handles the interstate transfers. They should direct you on this. I wrote a letter to his case manager in support of Victor's transfer. Here, if a prisoner wants to transfer, they have to pay the cost of the transportation. (That is so little compared to the cost in calls and my transportation to go visit him!!) I am also sending a letter to the Commissioner of MA, regarding the request. I was told this wouldn't hurt as he was the last one to sign off on it: approval/or denial.
Maybe you've already tried this?

Thanks Pamela, you have been so much help. I am going to get John's case manager's address and write him. Again, Thanks

This area is easier for me because I'm working on the same thing right now to get Victor closer to me. He's in was in Mass. and then they transferred him to Virginia...Crazy! So for the past month I've found out more information and who to contact! If you have problems finding the right department incharge of these transfers let me know and I'll see what I find!
