I was just wondering if anybody could give me any insight on rules for halfway houses ?? Can a person leave for things other then to go to work? can the guys get visits or go home for a visit? Any information would be great..... My mom use to work for Springboard and the John Howard society, and the offenders were allowed to have visitors and be let out on weekend passes, but besides going to work or school they could not leave. This was a few years ago and they are are mostly for young offenders but I figured that the rules were generally the same. Thank you in advance.

A friend of mine was in a halfway house and he had weekend passes, had friends in and had a curfew. He would leave but HAD to be back at a certain time or that privilige was taken away from him. He could not be a minute late.
It is also a privilige they have to work up to. (doing chores, obeying rules etc). Back when my friend was in it wasn't just a given - he had to earn it.

Every inmate that arrives on dayparole, fullparole, or parole to a halfway house, has his own conditions/passes, set by the National Parole Board, the assigned parole officer, and halfway house counselor.
On Day Parole release, you go straight from the prison, via public transit, or if you have a friend or family drive you, directly to the halfway house.
Usually your first day, they give you a pass for acouple of hours. Each week you are there, are once you become employed, generally you are allowed a longer curfew. You also will be required to not only tell them where you are going to be, but provide a phone contact where you are going.
You must also call in between 1 and 3 times aday at specific times. It is best to have a cell phone, because if you say you are going to be somewhere, they do random phone calls to confirm you are there.
As for visits, all halfway houses encourage family members and friends to visit the halfway house, and have specific hours and areas within the house to visit.
Once you are employed, you can also have weekend passes to your home or any approved address. Once approved by your parole officer, you can have weekend passes every weekend.
Each halfway house has it's own set of rules, but if you were to go visit one on your own, generally they don't mind showing you around and explaining how they work.
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
