CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT
Litt & Associates is honored to announce the $27 million settlement reached with the County of Los Angeles for claims against the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. This is the largest settlement to date against the Sheriff's Department. http://www.litt-assoc.com
There are 3 types of claims covered by the class action settlement now in the Los Angeles County District Court. Those claims begin with the date of April 23, 1996, and will continue until a future date to be set by the court. The groups covered are:
OVER DETENTION: This simply means that you were held in jail longer than you should have been. If you were arrested for any reason, went before a judge, and were released by the judge, you were entitled to be set free within a certain amount of time. If you were held longer than the time specified (within 8 hours, or by midnight of the day you were released), then you were over detained.
STRIP SEARCHED: If you were strip searched, or had your body cavities exposed, after going before a judge, being released, and then being returned to jail, you are a part of this claim. Strip searching means that you were ordered to remove all your clothing before being released. Body cavity searching means that you were ordered to remove all your clothing and then expose all of your private body parts to guards and others in the room before being released.
WRONG WARRANT: If you were arrested on a warrant for someone else, and were held in jail after it was proven that you were not the proper person, then you may be a part of this group.
A firm by the name of Rosenthal & Company has been hired to process these claims, and to assist you if you think you may fit into one of the above groups of people covered by the class action settlement. Rosenthal & Company is not a law firm, but a firm of professional settlement administrators. They are not connected to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, or to any other political or law enforcement agency. Their only purpose is to help determine who is entitled to payment under the terms of the settlement. For additional information on how you may apply for payment, You may also call their toll-free number for details: 1-866-461-1840.
Neither Litt & Associates, nor any of the lawyers mentioned in the notice of the settlement who were involved in these cases, may offer private help to anyone who may feel they have a separate claim in this matter. Since these law firms represent the class as a whole, they must protect the interests of the entire class and are not able to advise individuals personally.
