We are recently chit chatting together about creating a Book together. It's something we all would love to accomplish. Perhaps this thread will Spur on idea's from everybody, and even spur on the answers to how to get it in further into Motion? And perhaps it might spur on the reality that it might not be in the Big Plan. And then we can move onto something that is in the Big Plan :) It's all God, er Good, er God.

I work for an author. He is a pastor who also writes books. Although some of his books are published by Christian publishers, he self-publishes some also. I would like to suggest for a book such as this that you look into POD (print on demand) publishing. To begin with, it might be a helpful book to sell to people on PTO (probably especially mothers). No matter which avenue you choose, there will be cost involved. With POD you can get a smaller quantity printed, then if the demand picks up, you can always go through a conventional printer. There are many POD publishers. I can give you some names if you'd like. Many that I've looked up as a resource for first-time authors are Christian ones, but there are many secular ones also. I think most of this info you won't need until much later when you know the page count, etc. Getting a book to the publishing stage can take a very long time. Just getting started (maybe various individuals writing one chapter to begin with) is the first key.

You go girl, just a thought, you know how Chicken Soup for the Soul takes alot of stories and compile into a book, well, I thought the format can be on those lines, everyone write a different story and it gets in the book, it will be easier since we are so far apart, and as far as a title goes we all can just post ideas in this thread, my idea is "When Will the Sun Shine for Me" and the subtitle "Parents with Children in Prison", and if the writer of "I am a Mother Whose Son is in Prison" will allow its use, that could be the introduction page....Just a thought, the monies from the sale can go to help our PTO families in some form.

The 'organizational part' of me thinks we need to have chapters in groups. So what are the groups? Emotional? Spiritual? Reality? Financial? Physical geography? Resources for PWCIP?

And I might be wrong here, but I don't think our chapters should be posted here in the forum. We need to think about sharing our email addresses for communicating about a book if we're really serious about doing one. Do not post your email addresses here on the forum, ok? Use Private Messaging for that if you want to share your email address.

I'm a newbie to this prison world. Others are the veterans. What do you all think we should do? I just think we've scattered ourselves already in the forum and there's nothing wrong with that. We've responded to one another just as we needed to and I feel so fortunate to have found you all. But the topics for a book, well, we don't want them all scattered about, do we? Juuuu-ust askin'.... LOL

MDF1965, that is a great idea, chapters in groups are the only way to pull everythings together, as for this thread, we will use it only for info on the book, I am willing to post my email through PM, as far as a commitee, everyone that contributes to the book is a commitee member, but I know what you mean, as far as people to do the research should be those that have more time than others, my case is this, I have been off work from my teaching job since June (broke my leg on field trip), I now have my cast off and using a cane, I don't have small children nor do I have a husband, so I have time to follow up on leads, do research, I am looking for direction from BlesstheInmate, since it was her vision to get us started, so Bless, get you hynee in here and lead the charge:D .

I agree with MDF that we'd have to have certain headings or sections, otherwise I'm afraid most of the stories would all sound so similiar just like our posts on here. (Sometimes when I read posts about your boys I feel as if I could have written it myself. I almost feel as if we're all mother to the same boy in a sense.)

I also think the stories can't be simply a pouring out of our feelings. Again, it could become quite monotonous that way.
Perhaps we could share stories of things our sons have put us through BEFORE they were incarcerated. Since those things are in the past now, they may even sound somewhat amusing. I bet there will be a lot of head nodding or shaking going on as the stories are read. And if no one other than the members of PTO purchase a copy, so be it.
I can see this project bringing us all even closer, can't you?

You are right Jame, the only way for this to work is for it to be true stories of what we have been through, and still going through, we don't have to use real names, but the stories must be true, this book is for awareness, support, and to let people know they are not alone. I also see a final ending with stories of life after prison, whether it is good, bad, or indifferent...

I think the use of our screen names will be nice under story contributors, and ladies, this is going to be alot eaiser than some of you think. Please don't think that it takes a PhD to do this, I am an educator, and I have the worst spelling at my school..., if you need help pulling your own personal story together, I happen to know there are alot of resourseful people on this site, I also know that there are some high profile cases who's parents are on this site, but remember, we are family, if you get involved, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not judge, we get that enough.

MDF1965, I have just been reading some of you post on the sites, for what we are trying to do with the book, I think you would be very instrumental in helping bring this project together, your organization skills with your thoughts are just what we need...

I think about book is a good idea. A book for mothers "sad to say" of son who are imprisoned. Start from the beginning, the emotions, fears, etc. A sort of guide? Of course, knowing me, I would want Christian answers also. :)

Do you think your Pastor would suggest forming an organization first?
Because what I'm starting to see as far as filing the Proper Form for registering our Book with the Libray of Congress, that we are a larger than usual amount of Authors -
All of Us - are Authors.

* When Filing as Authors of our book
Each one of us would need to include our Names and Addresses on the Form we file.
Perhaps an organization would Umbrella All of us as One Unit?

I tested my skills as a researcher for a couple of things. Big Mistake! I'm rapidly finding out I'm not very fast or good at it. And directing I would have us all lost in some forest. giggle.

Its a marvelous idea!!!! I have an English degree and spare time and some ideas. I do not type well at all.....and am too old to spell nicely anymore, but I would be thrilled to be a part of your project !

If I might make a suggestion....???...I feel as if a 'How To Book ' would be a success. There are lots of books that guide parents on sending their child off to college,camp or Life. We are taught how to potty train a baby and how to entertain a toddler ...but Nobody tells a mother how to prepare and send her child to prison ?!:eek: Thats why we have found eachother here.

A book dealing with the stages of the process,the pitfalls,the questions to ask and the paths we go down.......well,that would be something I would have bought!

Maybe a title. ? People could pick up this book and find answers to things like:

How did we get to this point?
What to ask a Lawyer?
Do I need a mitigator (sp)for my child?
Letters to the Judge/Prosecutor

What do we tell the neighbors :-)
Sentencing day
Grief and acceptance
Tricks to use when a mother is weeping and fearful.....
How to help your child thru the process of grieving.
Drug abuse.....will prison"fix" my child?

etc etc etc.......and have personal accounts from the contributers.

There are books all over the net from people who did time, but nothing by the parents who stand and wait( and we are growing in numbers) and dont know what to do? We all had to learn a new language of prison abbreviations,protocol,trends and issues...and there are peole that I personally know , who have questions and fears . I have sent them here but many times they are too stunned or too sad to search for an answer.:confused:

If I can participate, I'd be happy to do so........Its a wonderful idea. If I can ever be in a position to do for a parent, what you all have done for me.......Count me in! Please! Good luck !!

I was reading your first post and my eyes lit up! I feel a Series coming on! Oh yes I do. I do.

This will be quick because I've two little girls to get ready for daycare. But, we have never went through the Library of Congress for our books. Not sure why or why not, but it must not be a must because thousands of his books that we self-publish have sold. A work is legally copyrighted automatically. It's not necessary to pay and have it registered. I can get more necessary info if you need me to. But, truthfully, I don't have much extra time any more since we've taken in my niece's two daughters (3 and 5 yrs old, plus we both work full time). I will do what I can to help though.

You will need a ISBN.... but that will come much later, when the book is near completion.

If I can just give my opinion on some of this.... I think I see 2 different types here.... one is a Chicken Soup style w/ short encouragements/stories etc the other is the How to style. I like both but think they should be seperate. well, that is my opinion. or my 2cents worth anyhow.

Sure they will. Can't get decent food for our children and the thought of having an exterminater come to the prisons and kill off the HUGE roaches that have been there for years is far from the budget; I see no problem asking them for money for a book. Anything like politics it probably would go through. :D LOL Thanks for the laugh....

Please be sure to read that *Publishing on demand* article that I mention above. It is a way to get our manuscript PRINTED FOR FREE! And this may be just what we were looking for. I think it merits further investigation. I went to Lulu.com and it looks simple enough. What we'll have to work on first is the chapters. I think we need to find a chat room and set up a time for all of us to get together and brainstorm. I could try and find one if you want. There must be a way to do it! How many have AOL? put your hands up! oh crap! I can't see your hands!

I'm at work also, so this will be quick. I was going to suggest Lulu.com because we had found them to be less expensive than some other POD publishers. Here's what the info on them we had sent out to some new authors who had contacted us:

This is a secular company, but seems to be less expensive than most others. Basic printing cost per book is $4.53 plus .02 per B/W page. Bulk discounts begin at twenty-six copies. Distribution services are extra. Their services do not include formatting or cover design, nor do they have customer phone support.

In the article Mary linked, when they say you can publish for free, what they mean is you would have to get prepaid orders so you have the money before you get the sold books printed. But, there are still going to be pre-published costs involved.

Helen, the ISBN is connected to the barcode, which you have to have if there are hopes of distributors buying the book and if we ever want it to be available in bookstores. For just personal use or sales to friends, etc, it's not needed.

The book idea looks like it's starting to come together.

Ideas would be mental health/illness and the correlation with criminal activity. A lot of inmates in prison have mental illnesses. Struggles to obtain treatment for ill incarcerated prisoners-mental or physical illnesses. Incorporate the stuggle to find a life after the debt to society has been paid with the ability of every Tom, Dick and Harry to view their files criminal file. That has to have a lot to do with the recividism rate.

Humanizing an issue makes people more aware.

We still have the dream for the idea of writing a book together. I know just as we were gaining some fantastic momentum, things faded off, by no fault of anybody. It just did.

For anybody still wanting to do this, or anybody who just saw this message and thread for the first time. Let's continue onward and jump right onboard, Need lots of help. Takes some efforts on everybody's behalf but it'll be so worth it to have our loved ones read this someday and so many others if all goes well.

Oh we were all busy being traumatized by being thrown into the system right around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years and the Aftermath. Do you believe how far we've come? Praise God! We do have a place to go now though. :)

Hey all. just want to add a note about the book. this is not only for parents (both moms & dads) who's loved ones are in the system, but also, even if your child has come home, or soon coming home, you have experienced everything we are trying to relate to new parents coming to the system. so if you have something you would like to offer, please do.
and if any of us are worried about using our names, to the best of my knowledge we can use a 'pen name' or even like our names on the forum.

i dont know how to get updates on a thread without posting, so im posting so i will get updates :^)

just want to add, if you have something to contribute, you can e it to me if you want. I can then make sure it gets saved or put into correct book content.

well, for the lack of enthusiasm, it is beginning to feel like the little red hen who wanted to make bread. everyone was excited about the prospect but no one seemed to want to do any part but eat it. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it is very disappointing and sad. there are so many new parents coming into the system everyday. they would so benefit with a book like this.

well, maybe it was just a pipe dream.

i swear dgal,i have went to that book thread a dozen times,and sit and stare at it,and freeze up,i just need some guidance,help,,,,,,,,,

I am definitely interested in working on this!!!! I'm still in PA helping my cousin so I can't do much until I get back home to Michigan and my own puter and where my time is my own once again. I'll be home before Easter.... like the day before!

I know it took me a few times to finally get there. just keep trying different ways n names. i am on as D'gal. heck, I still have to put in a couple times when I log in before it lets me. let me think a few .... we need a time that we can all get together to work on it, while bless is away.
Regg... what publicity ? you think we are going to be famous ? I can see it now....

remember that most of us are not planning to use our real names in the book. though I may. don't know.
we also still need to decide who will be editor, treasurer, etc etc.

ok, so how do we solve some of these probs..? the only thing I can think of is you write something and either pm it to me or email to my house address. any other suggestions ?
oh and if you want some ideas of what is content so far of book, I can copy paste some things to you if you still can't get on.

D'Gal, YES! There is going to be book signings, appearances; Oprah, Montel, Rachel Raye, even Dr. Phil! :D Ya'll are going to be some famous Momma's and THAN ya'll can start bringing attention to the deplorable prison conditions and treatment of US prisoners! :thumbsup:

Hi O. actually it is a site that Bless set up for us for the book. umm let me locate where I put that and I can give you the info.
it has threads like title suggestions, a content (index) suggestion which I really like. etc etc.

it is late for me right now... I turn in by 8 pm since I get up at 3:30 and still only average tops 4 hrs sleep.

I hear ya Moma K.... been fighting insomnia for years. Sometimes I take double the Lunesta and just lay there, wide awake. But once I go, I'm gone on it. Need something way stronger to knock me out, but that's not what the Dr's want to give on a regular basis. Sooooooooooooo..........I'm happy just to get a good 4 hours non-stop sleep.

well, if everyone is designating their places like the audience and such, who is gonna help put stuff in the book. we need various stories to help the new parents out. sure don't just want mine. don't have enough there. come along people... contribute something.
this isn't going to be a big book, just kinda a handbook size. bigger (I hope) than a phamplet but smaller than a book.
oh yeah, and my daughter is gonna help out. she wants to write so for practice, gave her some thoughts to put together. so if you contribute something and not sure how to put something etc, she will do that for us.

O' after I get to work, I will pm you our book site.

We are recently chit chatting together about creating a Book together. It's something we all would love to accomplish. Perhaps this thread will Spur on idea's from everybody, and even spur on the answers to how to get it in further into Motion? And perhaps it might spur on the reality that it might not be in the Big Plan. And then we can move onto something that is in the Big Plan :) It's all God, er Good, er God.
