View Full Version : Self-surrender...but late...Help!
Cellie's Wife 10-27-2003, 09:11 PM I have a friend in tears. One of our PTO members..her husband...needed to report to prison by 5:30 PM today. Due to flight delays, cancellations, etc., he had to fly to another city and get a taxi an hour and a half away. He was going to be late. Will they hold it against him? She kept calling the prison till after hours when no one would answer.
I sure hope they don't... By the time you read my response I'm sure he's there and soon his wife will know the answer... ((hugs))

CenTexLyn 10-27-2003, 09:50 PM Much is going to have to do with what state you are talking about...I see you are located in Texas, so I do not know if your friend's husband is in Texas.
Most self-surrenders on a state sentence in this state are to the county jail, not directly to an ID transfer (or other intake) facility. Counties should be able to take people 24-7.
If this was a federal matter, perhaps someone with more of a fed background can speak up, but my recommendation if they did not get to the unit in time and were not presently in custody would be to report to the Sheriff's Office in that county...
Cellie's Wife 10-27-2003, 09:57 PM It is Federal...in KY. I just talked to her. The last she talked to him, he was in a cab on the way to Lexington. The airline paid for the cab because their schedule delays caused the problem, so maybe that will give him the excuse he needs to get off the hook. Certainly , it can't be the first time something like this has happened. If all had gone as planned, he would have been in Lexington before noon! SO, he certainly had made responsible preparations. Who could know it would be that many hours late?
lovinbilly4ever 10-28-2003, 01:36 AM sorry to hear this. i hope that everything works out fine for him.
although, back in..umm..2000..yeah 2000, i had to do a self-surrender (santa cruz county jail--cali)...they didnt even have a surrender date in their computers (for me)....although i did have a date on my papers...they took me in either way..although im not too sure how often THAT happens..lol :hmm:
good luck!!
greyghost 10-28-2003, 06:43 AM He will not get into any trouble for arriving late - provided he still arrives on the same date that he was supposed to surrender; especially if he can show that it was beyond his control. They may hassle him a little over it, but in the long run it really doesn't mean much.
For the most part, for a person who is scheduled to self-surrender to federal prison, as long as he arrives on the date that he is supposed to, they can't/wont do much. The BOP wants you to surrender between 12 noon and 2 pm, although if he doesn't show up till 5pm, 8pm, etc, they will just process him and move on.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Cellie's Wife 10-29-2003, 12:27 AM Thanks so much for your replies and help. We won't know how it went until he is allowed to call his wife in a few days. I'll let you know. It was pretty nerve wracking for both of them, though, I can tell you.
rap_gurl 10-31-2003, 08:59 AM I hope everything turns out well.
I know what it is like to worry about something like that.
flygirlaa2 10-31-2003, 03:07 PM I too hope it turns out alright. I also hope it wasnt my airline who caused the problem. :)
Keep us updated. I want to know how it goes.
Cellie's Wife 11-06-2003, 09:52 AM Well, it turned out OK.We don't know ALL the details, yet, because he still doesn't have his phone connections on...but it seems to have been a non-issue.
I am here to tell you what a blessing this PTO forum is. Since we were able to find each other because of this forum, I have been able to help this family communicate with each other when there was no other way except for snail mail. My husband is there where "Z" surrendered. I talk to him daily and I can pass messages to "Z's" wife. Since both of our husbands are ill, it helps so much to have another person who can communicate if either of them develop major problems. I was able to reassure both of them and give them valuable information about the prison before he self-surrendered. No value can be placed on a service such as this. Thanks so much to David and all of you who work to make this happen!! The blessings of heaven to all of you!
I encourage all of you to find other inmates in the same prison whose family members you can communicate with. It is very helpful in times of trouble, to be able to compare notes. Instead of wondering why there was no phone call:
>>is he out of money?
>>out of phone time?
>>taken to hospital?
>>phones out of order?
>>prison- wide shut down?
......what a relief to be able to call the other family to check on your loved one and see what the story is!
JAM29 12-23-2003, 07:26 PM IN SEPTEMBR OF THIS YEAR I DID A SELF SURRENDER AND THEY HAD TO CHECK IT OUT AND DIDNT FIND NOTHING ON THEIR COMPUTER BUT THEY TOOK ME ANY HOW AFTER LOOKING AT MY PAPER THAT I GOT IN THE MAIL ( BROWN COUNTY JAIL).
