They take appointment and non-appointment visits. To schedule an appointment call: 559-386-7473 Mon, Tue & Wed between 11:00am - 1:00pm

They allow $1.00 bills now. (Up to $30.00).

No cigarettes are allowed.

TIPS FOR VISITING AVENAL:

If you have an appointment try and get there earlier than your scheduled appointment. Why? Because they can move through the list pretty quick. If you are there earlier, there's a good chance you will get in before your scheduled visit.

Those without an appointment will be processed AFTER the visitors with appointments. Once again, get there before 8:00am. They pass out the visiting forms with numbers on them. They take groups of five, so the lower your number, the faster you will be admitted for processing.

As for clothing, Avenal does not seem to be as strict as some other prisons. They are making a point of telling visitors to wear shoes that are supportive. This does not mean that they have to have straps. It means that they can't be like beach/shower sandals with no support. This is for safety reasons. As always, bring extra clothes in case they want you to change.

Effective Friday, October 10, 2003, visitors will be able to call the Avenal State Prison Visitor Processing Center to schedule an appointment to be processed for a visit up to TWO weeks in advance.

Appointments may be made by calling 559-386-7473 on the following days and hours:

Mon, Tue, Fri 10:00am - 1:00pm
Friday Evening 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Appointments will be scheduled for Saturday, Sunday, and scheduled visiting Holidays. Visitors will be able to schedule an appointment to be processed between the hours of 8:00am and 9:45am. Visitors who arrive and DO NOT have an appointment, will be processed after all visitors with appointments have been processed, or at 10:00am.

Update on Avenal. I do not know where to post this so here it is. They are on modified lockdown status because an inmate escaped. They cannot find any point of exit so they think he is still on the grounds somewhere. They are searching so no visits please call 1-800-374-8474

Does anyone know how long it takes to get approved to visit? And if at all possible, does anyone know the best route to get to the prison from northern Cali, above San Fran? Any help would be great, I'm still new to all of this. Thanks all, and hang in there!

Welcome to PTO!

It takes between 3-6 weeks to get approved. Once they have status of your visiting form, they will notify your boyfriend/friend and he has to write you to tell you're approved or denied. As to best travel route, it's best just to mapquest your route. :confused: Im Going to *~*Avenal State Prison*~ * In California....This Weekend, Where is the closest Motel Or desent place to Stay at the nite before?...:p ....and Is it ok to wear ... Slip on Sandel's it covers "half "of the foot ..with "no rear "strap.....? Can someone help me please ? ....I'm new at visiting Avenal any information would be helpful ~* Thank~You~*:D ~:thumbsup:
