GaPeach352002 03-18-2002, 04:04 PM I've heard alot about people earning degress while in Prison.. was curious if anyone knows where I can find out any information about this? My husband is going a tad stir crazy and thought that earning a degree might keep his mind busy while alway. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
bella 03-18-2002, 04:59 PM The University of OHIO has a program for prisoners. They have information about the program online. Just type in University of Ohio and hit search. The actual program is called Division of lifelong learning. The professor who runs the program is Kenny Armstrong. His title is director of program for incarcerated inmates. It costs abot $64 per credit hour, and they offer both AA, BA and BS degrees. He has been looking into this program but is having a hard time getting permission from the facility he's in. You know those same people who preach rehabilitation, lol. He already has some credits and we are hoping that he will be able to transfer them. He also spoke to a few people who have completed the program. One man got a BA in English. He told him the program is really hard, you have to have a lot of discipline and patients. He explained the negative part of not having a professor on the spot to assist with questions, and also the draw back of not attending a lecture and having discussions. Not matter what the degree was worth it though!
Well I hope the info. helps.

Shortie 03-18-2002, 06:55 PM Also have him check with the prison advocate and see if they have any classes in there for them. My husbands prison has there own school and they can earn degrees from them for free.
Daveswife 03-18-2002, 07:00 PM Tell him to check with his counselor. Most prisons have a college they use or offer.
Good luck
GaPeach352002 03-20-2002, 10:29 AM Thanks for all the info. Bella I called Ohio yesterday and they are sending out some detail information to me and my husband. Course he's at a facility now waiting on sentencing until July 12th but they told me that it will take that long just to get the ball rolling in case we don't have other options. Thanks again!
Budwoman 03-20-2002, 01:16 PM Go for it girl. My son has earned a degree in (would you believe it) Criminal Justice with a minor in Physocology (sp)
In NC all prisons do not have a college close by so you have to request to move to a location that offers the college programs. Research all that from where you are and most systems will allow that.
Good Luck!

DiamondsBoo 03-20-2002, 01:17 PM In Indiana, if you take college courses or earn your GED they take time off your sentence, also, you might want to check into that where you are.
Shortie 03-20-2002, 07:40 PM That is cool that they take time off there sentance. Wish they did that here in texas. It would be nice.
sherri13 03-20-2002, 10:31 PM anyone know what's available in NC? Also, any correspondence courses available to become a licensed barber?
Donna, sounds like you might know what's available in our area...

Budwoman 03-21-2002, 08:08 AM Sherri:
Each prison unit has a Community College that they have an agreement with to Educate inmates in certain areas. Check in the area your husband is in and see what is available. Also, give his case worker at the unit a call and see what she/he has to say about where to get the education.

jdswifey02 04-29-2002, 06:50 PM I just came back to this thread recently to look up that Ohio University thing so I can get some info out to JD... figured I would put up a direct link to their "incarcerated learners program"
http://www.ohiou.edu/adultlearning/incarc.htm
bella 04-29-2002, 10:09 PM GOT YOUR THINKING CAP ON AS USUAL JD
Wow...you guys really got it together. I liked that link and I tell you what, it is really good to see a college that cares about inmates. That is so unusual. I was wondering though, what about those that need to get their GED? Also, I am going to ask a really dumb question here, but are Death Row inmates allowed to take courses?
I'm researching, but havn't been able to find anything on that yet.

escamillo 08-18-2002, 11:42 PM You may try Stratford Institute, at this link:
http://www.sci-careers.com/n-prog.htm
A former fellow inmate of my son is taking these courses, and we are told that the quality is very good. I've contacted Stratford and they are sending brochures to my son, and soon I'll have more details. One thing I don't like is a short career included as an option (Astrology/Parasycology) but the group of long careers seem to be pretty serious (Accounting, Business Management, etc.) and I know that the rates are affordable, approx. 50.00/month. They handle everything by simple mail and don't require Internet connection.
I've got brochures from other universities but the costs are in the level of 4,800.00 for a two-year career.
Un abrazo - Andrés
Hilde Bogaerts 08-19-2002, 02:49 AM my man is in VA, and he has done several courses already in the last years...he is a barber, learned that in prison, but now he is a librarian , well that is where he works now and he took courses like" the national tax training school" and "accounting" and "business management" he paid for them all, and I could even send money to thoses schools from Belgium to help pay...but right now he is doing a course that is FREE....and he will earn an associates degree...the course is "religious studies"...he has two years to complete it. Normally a course like this would cost over three thousand dollars. A friend of his in prison has been doing this course and now he is working on his masters degree...my man sais that this degree can be incorporated into his other achievements to show a sense of morality on his behalf. His friend is almost finishes with his master's degree and with the credists he has now he is trying to find a college that will provide him with free courses in business or psychology.
Odiesmom 08-25-2002, 02:24 AM My son has become interested in the paralegal field. I have sent off and gotten info on my end, since my husband will be paying the tuition, but Odie hasn't gotten his packet yet, which is no surprise knowing how slow the mail is, or the jails are in getting the inmates letters, books, etc. My question is, this 2 year course is going to cost just a little over $3000.00, but being that he is a felony (tho non of his charges are aggravated, I don't know if that matters or not), but getting back 2 the point, if he completes the course and gets his Ass. Degree, reckon he'll be able to use it once he is released? We're in Texas, in case anyone that makes a difference. He seems adament about this, we've sent him books on the overview of what being a paralegal involves and it is something he DEFINATELY wants to pursue, but I don't need to tell ya'll that $3000.00 is alot of money, especially if it turns out that he can't use the degree because of his felonies. Any thoughts? Thanx...Carla (odiesmom)

Lysbeth 01-16-2003, 11:16 PM Brian earned an associate's degree from a community college in Alabama several years ago. He even got to go to his graduation on campus and walk through the line as if he were a free man. I am not too sure about this but I THINK this was both federally and state subsidized. He was planning to continue on further but then, he says, the Clinton administration put their foot down on prisoners getting an education while inside. I THINK what may have happened is when the federal gov't took away their part of the funding the state of Alabama cut out such programs with local and near-local schools. All I know is such education opportunities no longer exist in Alabama anymore, though I'm sure it varies from state to state (and obviously so). I'm guessing some of those states kept their programs up when the Feds cut their part of the $$ out.
Brian is in the middle of working on another degree program but it's by correspondence course and he had to pay the costs himself. Hope that Georgia has a little more opportunity available...

KRIS_NC 01-17-2003, 01:14 PM SHERRI MY EXHUSBAND IS IN PAMLICO HE JUST FINISHED TAKING A CLASS AND GETTING READY TO START ANOTHER,ILL ASK HIM WHAT EXACTLY NC OFFERS
JodyAnnShaw 01-17-2003, 10:44 PM I'm not sure about this... but can't you enroll inmates in the 'through the mail' college courses... ? You know, the commercials; "Get your degree in any of the following areas..." PCDI? Maybe?
Ya'll know what I mean. IF I'm not mistaken, Dale said that was the only way he could take any classes.... but I'll ask him to make sure. Of course, that's in MIchigan, but atleast it's something to check in to.
