Proposition 36-Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act of 2000
Prop 36 was approved by California voters in November 2000, and took effect on July 1, 2001. The purpose and intent of the act is to divert nonviolent defendants, probationers and parolees charged with simple drug possession or drug use offenses from incarceration into community-based substance abuse treatment programs.
