Maybe this only helps the new people to this site, but I wanted to share the one thing I wish I had known before I had someone at FCI Morgantown. Each inmate has a visitor list. This list is limited at any time to 20 people. Once someone is on, they can visit as often as they want, but if you have 20 people on your list, no one else can visit until the inmate has one of those people removed (dropping back to 19 or lower). At that point, new people can be added, again up to 20. The problem is that one you are removed, you can never be added again.

Unfortunately, not knowing that, many people that know and love us signed up for visitation rights immediately, even if they hadn't actually planned to visit for a few months. So now, people that want to see the inmate in the next few weeks can't because all 20 slots are filled up and people that hadn't planned to go for a few months don't want to give up their slots because they'll never have a chance to go. at the end of the day, an inmate can remove anyone from the list that they want to open up one of the 20 slots, but it ends up creating bad feelings because people wonder if they are less important than other friends/family.

please let me know if my explanation wasn't clear. i just know that in hindsight, we would have planned visitation approvals differently and i wish that i would have known this.

One correction here. Once someone comes off the list, they can get back on. There is no problem there. If you keep the old list, and want to add someone back on it, show the old list with the old name on it to your counselor and they should add it back on immediately without filing forms or anything like that. One of those little tricks you learn.

As a follow up, I mentioned this to my family in Morgantown and he notes that this is specific to the counselor. You must have had a decent one. Ours is just lazy and made my relation sign an agreement that he would not ask to have anyone resigned.

How long does it take to get on the list? I have been waiting about a week.

sometimes 1 week, sometimes 4 if you are not immediate family. seems to depend on the counselor that your inmate has been assigned to.
