Hello All!

I want to post a message here to thank each and everyone of you who have been so very supportive and helpful for us newbies who are lost in the system rules and regulations, reception, mail, book money, jpay, ordering booksk, visitation applications. Thank you to PTO for keeping this site alive and well.

Good news! These are some time-frames for anybody who might be curious how long it took for things from us to him. Hopefully for you, it goes faster. But we're overjoyed at the moment it got there.

We started writing to him October 25th'ish.
We deposited book money via jaypay.
He was informed a few days later that it was posted.
He got our first letter on November 13th.
We ordererd 2 soft cover books for him on Nov 6th.
Delivered to the Prison November 8th.
He received his books he on November 14th!
He also received 3 more letters November 15th!
He was granted store shopping on November 16th!
He said the next shopping day would be December 26th.

He sent us visitation applications very fast, we sent them back
right away. It took about 3 weeks for us to receive word that we have to start all over again. Inmate didn't sign them before he sent them. ewps!

Has not seen a councelor yet, but will request for his release date information.Cellmate and him are first time offenders, so they are supporting eachother and getting along really well.

Bad News: Our applications for visitation were returned due to the inmate not signing and dating it before he sent it to us. We found out we have to write a letter to him to send us more new applications. The inmates are not informed other than an application being approved. So he has no idea right now, till he hears from us about it.

So maybe 6 more weeks till we can go to the next step in trying to get a visitation. I dunno?

He is so grateful for the mail, the books, envelopes, stamps and Pad of paper. We are so grateful to those who helped us get thru this stage 1 of Reception for Lancaster Prison.

How was your visit there on Thanksgiving?

Do the inmates tend to be transferred out of Lancaster after Reception? How do they determine what level they are? And what Yard they'll be in?

there should be a lancaster thread that would be good to keep up on whats going on. cause i know sometimes i wonder if its just me or is it them.

What does it mean in Reception? I'm so lost. I know my boyfriend just got to CSP, Los Angeles Lancaster today, by checking out
lasd site. Does this mean he is in reception? Will he be sent to a different location? or is this where he will serve his time. So confused.

Reception is a nice way of saying evaluation. This is where he goes though medical and other tests to determine where he should be placed. After all tests, he sees his counselor and they let him know where he will be placed for the rest of his sentence. Reception is probably the hardest part - they have no phone contact and the not knowing is a hugh factor. So write him as often as you can, that's all he has right now. It will get better once he's been transfered.

Wendy! Welcome to the Lancaster Thread. Glad you found it! We need all we can in here to find and keep information flowing for eachother. Judeca is right on with her information. I'm a newbie to the system. Bless Judeca for all the knowledge she shares everyday on PTO.

Reception in Lancaster is where my son is at as well.

You will soon get a letter from him and hopefully a visiting application for you to fill out and send back to the prison. Once it's approved, they'll tell the inmate and it's up to him to contact you in mail to let you know you've been approved. Then there's a visiting phone number we're supposed to call to make an appointment to visit. We haven't gotten that far yet, still waiting for approval. Since late October. Our first applications didn't go so well.

That is amazing he's able to call you. I've only heard that in reception at Lancaster that they are not given that privilage. Just mail and books. I'm glad he's able to call you though, that has to be a big comfort to hear from him. I hope the rules have changed, even for a day. All of us might be getting some collect calls soon. My phone just rang too! Hope it's a collect call from Lancaster. Oh no, it's not. ugh :)

Thank you all for your responses - This is a great support system, when no one else knows what you are going through. I find it kind of difficult to even try to explain to any of my friends what it is like to have someone you love away like this. So I am glad for a site like this. Thanks for the responses and welcoming me in the this space.

You need to call records and get his CDC# and exact address. His booking number no longer applies. I'm sure Bless the Inmates has that number she can give that to you.

I recommend calling your inmate's counselor to make sure you have his correct CDC, yard and cell numbers before writing. Just call the main number and ask to be transferred to "Inmate Records". ***

They won't call you back. They should still be there, I'd call again - I don't think they work on the weekends, and Monday is Christmas Eve.

I just called again. I dont have his CDC# so they had me call
916-445-6713 to get the CDC#.

I called them and they didnt have a # for him yet. I wonder if that takes several days, especially over the holidays...hmmm

Fax inquiries for CDC # can be sent to 916-322-0500 in case anyone else is reading this and needs these numbers.

I'll have to call again. :(

Inmate Locator = (916) 445-6713

Try calling the number, they have m-f business hours only. You might get thru if you keep calling back if it's busy. They'll tell you his cdc number if he's been issued a cdc number. It takes a few days between county and state prison for it to be on Record.

You'll need to give them his birthdate and name before they give you his cdc number over the phone.

Use that cdc number they give to you to write to him at Reception. You don't have to wait for his mail first. We didn't. Try to send him a few stamps, envelopes and lined paper so he can write back to you.

I wonder where most of the Lancaster Inmates are being transferred to after Reception? I know it's a bit of Lotto, first bed open, where ever. But I do wonder if there's any sort of Pattern whatsoever where they get transferred to?

I know what you mean about browsing the web. I get so consumed in with this Prison Life now. I browse and browse and browse and browse.

I was checking out Tehachapi Prison forum. Our lawyer thought our son would go to Tahachapi, but he landed at Lancaster for Reception. Tahachapi inmates were served a nice Thanksgiving meal. Lancaster didn't get all the yummies that Tahachapi got. That's not fair :) But I'm glad those inmates got a nice dinner. That's what matters.

Oh I check mail at 2pm! Imma gonna wear some rollerskates. Should be an interesting trip down a flight of stairs. giggle.

I've learned a little secret that PT Rose dosn't know. Push all the wrong buttons if you want to actually speak with anyone with a pulse. Let someone in human resources or anywhere else you know isn't getting many calls answer, then tell her<him you were misdirected, plead your case, they transfer you right then, and the phone is answered on the first ring. I've pulled this stunt at 3 different facilities now, and it's the only way I got to speak with the person stayed on hold for, for I couldn't even say how long because I was never able to talk to them anyway!

Last night I had to get my pea-brain together and go to each of your names and make sure I wasn't replying wrong information to the right Wendy or the Right information to the Wrong Wendy.

Lancaster Reception: I don't think we'll be getting a call from the inmates as they have little privilages in that stage. Although one posted here that she has gotten alot of calls. And miracles occur in this life.

Welcome! Wow another member dealing with Lancaster!

We think our mail to Lancaster gets to him in about 14 days or more. We write the date down when we send it, when he replys he sometimes mentions the date he got a particular letter. I little tracking system thingy. It takes 3-4-5 days from him to us though.

Please let us know how he's able to do this, does he get special permission? Is he in reception or mainline? Then we can take some action on it for ourselves if we are able to. Great he's still calling you daily :)

What I know, is that their councelor will be able to give them the most accurate release date. Which I'm gathering takes 30-90 days average before councelor time while their in Reception stage.

In the mean time, I know my son was able to find out information in how to go about putting in a paper request for for a release date. He got his answer that way. I'm thinking it is a closely estimated date. The councelors date would be more accurate.

He can ask for an "earliest release date form". My son did this and it took about a week and he got his date, and he hasn't even seen his counselor.

Well he's sayin they knock off at least a month so it would be march 16 but he's saying its supposed tio be more. Would the counseler know since he's only been there since 12/21? i dont want him to call me one day of of the blue and say im out! If not i'll have to be sitting around waiting for him to call anytime between jan-march. and i can't i work, ihave a life lol!!

Can we send used books from bookstores at Lancaster? Anybody ever send one successfully?

2 books max per package.
Inmates are allowed 10 books in their possession total.
Paperback, Hardcovers get taken off before an inmate can have it.

Amazon.com is the best. When I order books on this site my son RECEIVES them within one week (7 days), sometimes as few as 4 days. Lancaster may be different - but where ever my son has been (they moved him again) they can only receive paperback books (and they don't take the cover off).

It's starting to sound to me like I need to start using Amazon service. I'll probly give the prison a call to get the ok on used books. I just have to get off this chair, pick up the phone and start dialing. easy eh! hehe!

Oh My! That was so near the time to see his counselor. Ack! Are they going to make him wait another 90 days? I sure hope not. All the delays. ugh. One thing I'm very happy for you Judeca that Wasco has it's own Forum. Lots of traffic going on there.

Personally I haven't sent any Hardcovers out. Just paperbacks so far. I'm too afraid to find out the book got torn to peices in the rip the cover off department. But let us know what happened when he receives them?

I kinda feel they're in reception extra long for a extra good safety measure so they don't send them into mainline in a haste with a mistake. The overcrowding issues and all. I'm dreading mainline time. But I'm also hearing that Reception is the hardest stage. So...I'm in between a rock and hard place with my feelings about any of this.

I don't know what's next. I have to re-read all the posts and information to not make any more mistakes.

We received 4 blue papers, each with the inmates name and our names stateing approved or disapproved. I'm suspecting you're going to get your's any day now. Very shortly.

Thank you Wendy! Something about calling an appointment number on a certain day of the week and getting thru was going to be the task. Something about they have limited amount of appointments and once they're filled that's it for the day. I'm about to go on another worry trip. :eek:

Maybe somebody will sign in and explain Lancaster Visitation Process in kindergarten language for people like me? giggle.

Hm.. I was thinking about that. But I'm really the only one who would go get him. His mom can't miss work and doesnt have a reliable car. I'm going to try and talk to the counselor and see if she'll tell me if not see if she can at least tell me when they would be informing him. I get letters really quick from him only takes about 3-4 days so if he hears something I may know quick. Does anyone know how long it takes for them to recieve letters? I haven't had any luck in speaking to a counselor, others have though. I left messages for him to call us back collect. Never got a call. I just found out I was trying to contact the wrong one. How do these things happen? ouch!

Mail from us takes longer for sures. Sending it on December 21st? Ok maybe he's gotten it by now. Like maybe he got it between January 4th and January 7th. If you've been using the PO box addy, try the direct to Prison addy if you haven't already. I've been writing very large and clearly on the envelope in hopes it's faster to scan and read in the process.

hmmmm trying to remember the address...it's a PO BOX...and I printed out my envelopes so that it is VERY CLEAR lol arial size 14 point font. That address is so long so this makes it easier to write. I printed out lots and lots of envelopes...lol so now i just write and send off, im a lazy writer...hehe. And well he must not like to write or something...hehe im going to get on his butt to write me more often..lol

I totally understand how you're feeling.

The best advice I had gotten from another PTO member when I was in shear panick. Is that she was able to let her inmate know that she knew where he was at by using Jpay to deposit money in the books.

The Jpay got there much faster than mail. They get a notice of deposit, thus letting him know that we knew where he was at and we were in contact.

yeah the first time doing envelopes is tricky but then you get the hang of it, just use one as the tester to get the right direction in line...hehe

Do you write or type your letters? I know writing is more personal but it's so much easier to type sometimes. I have been doing one written and one typed...haha...what about you?

I'm with you on the typed letters! I used to handwrite them. I get carried away. 26 page letters at times. ack! And takes me days hours to write them. I'm not a letter writer person. Just thrown into this new world by force. I finally figured out typing them is sooo much easier and faster.

I've never sent Hardcovers. I think that the inmate has to make a choice of either having hard cover and back removed, or to send the book back to sender. They'll end up with just the inside of the book. And I don't know who ends up paying for the shipping back to the bookstore.

The officers we've encountered are all very professional and helpful. Reception guys are getting outside time. 3 days a week for 3 hours. Nice! Of course that might not be perfectly accurate. Reception guys don't wear watches, but I don't even go outside that much, so they're getting good amounts of fresh air weekly. :)

I'm new to this.....so any help is appreciated. I have 2 brothers in LAC and one got moved almost 2 months ago(he's now housed there), the other is still sitting in reception. Does anyone know the longest they can be kept in reception. Other prisions ship no longer than 3 months. He's been there for almost 5 and they're saying he'll be in there another 3. I know he's gonna be moved cuz he's a lifer, but hopefully our appel will go through. Other family that is in has told me he might stay, but I doubt it. He knows his counsler but he won't tell him anything. What can I do? He's ready, he's been in wayside and la central for over 3 years, how can i help speed up the process. I was in Federal before but the rules are far from close with state. So I do know that there are things I can do by law, but Don't know all the state stuff.
Please let me know.

Hello Justsideways! Welcome to this Lancaster Thread. It's great you're here but sad under the circumstances to meet this way. We're all trying to put the peices together somehow with info we gather.

Being in county 3 years? Oh my Lord. Thats a long time.

I'm also hearing that Reception can take many months due to the overcrowding issues in Prisons. You can write to him though and send stamps and envelopes. Maybe hearing from you to tell him the waiting time is a bit slow will help somehow. He can send you a visiting application if you haven't done that yet. The visiting is Window and for 1/2 hour on Saturday or Sunday.

The food is appreciated in Lancaster compared to County I hear. More variety. You can put money in his books fast thru Jpay.com and send reading books directly from bookstores.

I'm glad you got thru to a reception counselor, I haven't had that happen yet.
