Hi my fiance is incarcerated in singapore and im curious how they calculate time served eg if given a 5 year sentence do you spend the actual 5 years? I was told theres a way they calculate counting both day and night and so its not actually the full 5 years....??
Pls advise

Hi Anglellina,
Sorry to hear about your fiance being incarcerated in Singapore, that is a long way from where you live, isn't it?
I can't really help with your time calculations, you would have to ask your fiance or his lawyer.
However, here is the link to the Singapore Prison Service that gives a little more detail about the facilities and so on.
Check back in with us soon and let us know how you (and he) are getting on.

Thanks. It really is a looong way you can imagine how long simple stuff like mail take. im going to see him next week tho :) :) this will be our 2nd visit and 2nd time im seeing him in 5 months. He did tell me how long he'd be in he got a sentence of 4 point somethng years and is to serve 34 months. Good behaviour may get him off ealier(fingers crossed)

Angellina:
If I am not mistaken (I lived there for some time), they do a back count to the day your fiance was first taken into custody. They are also quite generous with shortening sentences for good behavior.
Good luck to you both!

Thanks for the info Sheldon.
It can be hard finding out too much about Singapore!
Angellina, let us know how he gets on!

Hi
He's doing fine, started working.. so far he's served 13 months and has 21 months to go.Singapore is good as far as human rights and general treatment of the inmates but very long sentences even for petty offences!! He says his only problem is the denial of freedom otherwise the place isn't bad(for a prison that is).
They are allowed two visits per month half an hour each(20 mins if its face to face). All visits are no contact and you can write as often as you like. He can only write twice a month though. No phone calls till you get to a certain stage of serving your sentence and even then not regular calls(I wouldnt mind being billed for the calls but they dont permit calls) and he only recently 'qualified' to have pictures from home. Im allowed to send hm reading and study materials though.
My biggest gripe with them is he wanted to study computers while there (which they offer) but the education facilities are only open to Singaporeans!!!! He's working now and that makes the time move pretty fast and his soul is at peace. Just counting down the days....

Well, apart from his frustration about some of the training and phone call stuff, it sounds pretty positive!!
Thanks for letting us know how he is getting along.
How are YOU doing, tho?
Hope you are keeping your chin up!
Best wishes,
