Prison Fellowship is working hard to reform prison policies so that inmates are better prepared for the challenges they face after they are released. At the federal level we are working hard to pass the Second Chance Act, which includes grants to faith-based and community organizations to recruit mentors to help inmates make the transition from prison to the free world. The states are very important, too, because 90 percent of offenders are housed in state prisons.
To assist state legislators in focusing their departments of corrections on prisoner reentry, Justice Fellowship—the criminal justice reform arm of Prison Fellowship—developed model reentry policies. The Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Lance Cargill, put those model policies into a bill, The Transformational Justice Act, which passed both houses and was signed by Governor Henry.
