Ventress Correctional Facility was opened in August of 1990 with a primary mission to provide alcohol and drug treatment to the Department’s growing inmate population. Located in Clayton, the campus-designed Ventress maintains medium or below custody inmates in:

* One of the six on-going eight-week treatment classes.
* One of the two 15-week programs for inmates with dual disorders.
* An 18-month (minimum) Therapeutic Community.
* A six-month program, which was funded by a crime bill.
* One of two structured aftercare dormitories.

Ventress offers academic and vocation educational programs, which are provided by the nearby Sparks Technical College. In addition, Ventress provides community services to localized city, county and state agencies.

I can help you with this. My son just left there July 9. If he has to be somewhere this is probably one of the better ones. The guards are about the same everywhere from what I understand. Tell him just to do what he is told. My son did not have any problems while he was there. The SAP program was probably the roughest time. The inmates run it most of the time so they tend to give people a hard time. He was transferred to the Honor Dorm and did fine there. He had his buddies he hung with and pretty much stayed clear of the guards. Violence is minimal, he said a fight from time to time. The food is bad. He had money on his books so he could buy food from the canteen. We never had any problems when we went to visit. We were always treated very nice. Hope this helps some. Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks for the info it did help he has been there one week I have not heard from him yet. I call there to make sure he's there and alive, the co's will not tell me much except he is there and there is no reason why he has not wrote to me. They tell me his phone line has to be set up before he can call home. He got one year and a day, split sentence no early release. He was in Kilby 128 days and St. Clair Co. 10 days before Ventress and his family and I got to visit him at those places with no trouble we had to wait for 90 days of course, before the first visit at Kilby.

The classification officers there were always very nice and helpful. When my son went there he had 30 days to get his phone/visitors/funds list set up. He could call during that time and I could send money. After that you had to be on his list. I know a year seems like a long time, but you will be surpised how quick it passes for you. He probably will not think it is so quick though. The best thing you can do is write, write and write.

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT HE DOES CALL ONCE IN A WHILE NOW BUT NOT LIKE HE SAYS HE WILL. I GET 2 LETTERS AT A TIME THEN DO NOT GET ANOTHER TIL AWEEK OR SO AFTER HE'S WROTE IT. HIS FAMILY IS COMPLAINING HE'S NOT WRITING THEM EITHER BUT WHEN I DO GET TO TALK TO HIM HE SAYS HE HAS WROTE THEM!!! IT SEEMS LIKE THEY HOLDING BACK MAIL AND SENDING IT OUT AND BRINGING IT IN IN BUNCHES. IS THIS THEIR POLICY? BECAUSE SOMETHING IS GOING ON WITH THE MAIL I WRITE TO HIM ALMOST EVERYDAY ANF HE SAYS HE HASN'T RECIEVED A LETTER FROM ME IN OVER A WEEKS TIME NAD THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!!!!

Hi! My son has been in Ventree for a little over four years now and the mail tends to get like that. As far as the camp itself, I am glad he is there as opposed to some others here in Alabama. He is out in September of '08 and I am holding my breath until that time. If there is anything I can answer for you I will be glad to. I have been there for every visit and every family day for over four years. Keep looking ahead and know that this will be over. It is such an insane time.

I never had problems with the mail when my son was there. I think they probably have such a turnover in employees things can change at any time. As much as I hate to say it my son went through there with no problems. Check with his classification officer if you have questions. They were always very helpful.
