Imagine this in the U.S.:

Indian state to shift old lifers to open-air prison

September 16, 2007

An Indian state is building an open-air prison for old lifers, the Times of India newspaper reported Sunday.

It will be ready in three months in Buxar district in the north Indian state of Bihar, its Principal Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah said. The plan was cleared by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Old lifers, Amanullah said, would be shifted to the minimum security prison, where they would live with their families and would be allowed to take up job of their choice within prescribed limits.

Yeah, I visited a prison in Mexico once and wives or families could spend all day with the men, with complete privacy! Amazing.... they just had to go home at night.

It's sad that Americas (no)justice system continue to put distance between families, and they are only continuing the dysfunctional cycle that led to most incarcerated being incarcerated in the first place.

It's pretty amazing when you stop and think about the stupidity behind the no conjugals that most of us have to endure. Most of us already know that there would be far fewer problems with our men, and I'm not just talking about disciplinary problems, health wise, attitudes, these would all improve if conjugals could be brought back. Besides that, they'd make money, you know they would.

I know that my stress alone would decrease dramatically if we could have a weekend here and there, and I'm not talking just about sex. To have some privacy would be awesome.
