Heartless, a story of one man's heart
This is the story about a man with no heart.
He wandered around the world heartless; searching for something to fill the void until one day he stumbled into a village hurt from the cold and rocky road. He didn't let anyone help himhe just wanted the things he needed to get better so he could leave and move on. Well, he passed out from the exhaustion of not having anything for his soul to hold on to. A lonely young pheasant woman took him in. Everyone started to talk behind her back, saying that she was wasting her time on a cold hearted stranger.
A week later the man woke up in her arms. He told her that he had a dream. He dreamt that he went to Heaven. He said that God told him that he can't enter through the gates of Heaven without having a heart; and you can't appreciate pure beauty and happiness without suffering loss. He told her that God sent him back to Earth with a chance to find out what love was. He looked into her eyes and saw something that he'd never seen before. Then without a second to waste, he asked the woman if she would be his wife.
For years they lived, but the emptiness was still within him. One day she told him she was with child. He felt joy to learn that he would soon have a son or daughter, but he was still empty inside. When the day came, he delivered their baby girl into the world. That was the day he learned to laugh for the first time in his life. He lifted their new daughter for his wife to see but she had died giving birth to their child. He learned that day about what hurt felt like, and the emotions that surround it.
The years went on until he was old and dying. His daughter had married and had children of her own, but she still cared for her father even through the last days of his life. On his death bed he told her that he had met God the day he met her mother and God told him that he couldn't enter through the gates of Heaven until he knew what love and loss were, and how to be truly happy. He told her that he was afraid that God would turn him away for failing to find what he had long searched to find. His daughter cried when she heard the words her father said. He told her that he never knew his feeling for her mother until it was too late and she was gone. He told his daughter that he wasn't sure if he had shown her what love is so that she could find love for herself.
She told him that when she was little, he touched her hand and lifted her up to the sky. She told him that she remembered how the wind was blowing on her face and how clear blue the sky was so clear that she thought if she looked hard enough; she could see the angels flying above them. That was the best feeling she has ever had in her life, and at that moment she knew what it felt like to have a father's love. She told him that when she first met the man who is now her husband, she knew what love felt like from their first kiss under a plum tree in the rain. She told him that when her first child was born she knew the love and the pain of birth... the pain of love experience to bring a child into this world, and the love of the parents that made her.
She told him that she knew what love is because of how he told her stories about her mother, the way he spoke her name, the way his eyes would light up at the thought of her. She told her father that she had always known what love was and he had taught her about that every day since she was old enough to remember.
That night her father died. At the gates of Heaven God asked him, have you figured out what love and loss are? With that the man burst into tears and told God, "love is loss, and to know loss you must experience love." With that, the gates of Heaven opened up and inside the gate was his wife waiting for him. As he embraced her, she told him that she knew all along what a special man he was, and that the love he had for her, and their family was within him, even though he thought he had no heart at all.
There is someone out there that completes you. There is someone out there that will give you what you didn't know you were looking for. That person could be half way around the world, or as close as the person sitting next to you, but it you don't make an effort to try, then you don't deserve to have loved at all.
