Hello would like to know if anyone has a loved one at this prison. :broken:

My husband Jay in at Wynne, he's been there a year now. I've only been able to visit twice since he has been there (I don't drive so I have to rely on others when I go that way).... from what I hear from my husband, it's okay (that Unit) but never the less it is still a prison.

My loved one is at Wynne. Fortunately I am able to visit fairly often. From what I hear it's one of the better prisons to be at.

One of my best friends has been there almost 16 years, now. It seems fairly laid back and I never had any problems going to visit, either.

My Hubby is at the Wynne unit and he says they sweat the small stuff, but if you keep to urself ur better off...I've never had any major problems except at visitation it can get backed up and one time they forgot to call me back to see my husband because so many people were visiting.

My BF was there for 9 years. He has been recently tranferred to another unit, because he has made parole, and he is waiting for a rehab bed. It is very laid back. A great unit for education.

My husband is at the Polunsky Unit and I go right past all the units off 190. If ever ya want to plan on visiting about the same time frame and grab something to eat in the Huntsville area let me know!

HI!
I have placed my request in another thread before I found this one, but I think I am at the right place here!

I am going to visit my freind whoi is in the Wynne Unit, we got our extended visits (2 times 4 hours) approved, now we are trying to get contact visits, as I am not a family member, this seems to be rather difficult, does anybody here know what is the right way to try to get it anyway?

And coul any of you tell me what the contact and non contact visits are like, so I know what to expect? My friend has never had a visit in the Unit, so he can't tell me!

He was hgpoing on about having to yell, when having non contact visits, other wise we wouldnot be able to hear eachother, does anybody here know if this is true?

I actually have a million of questions, but I will stop for now..:)

Thank you for "listening"!

my husband has been in the wynne unit for awhile now. i have only had a noncontact visit a few times. it is true that you have problems hearing. there is like this plexiglass window between the two of you. in the middle of the window there is small holes for you to talk/listen through. before my husband and i got married we had to do noncontact visits. the only way i had a contact visit once was due to either staff error or just kindness; it was around the holidays (this was about 8-9 years ago). i wish you lots of luck and if you have any other questions i will do my best to help.

Yup, it's pretty noisy! And you get a crick in your neck from straining to hear. There isn't much you can do about it!!
Hope your visit goes OK, anyhow.

Thnx Kristen, Rach, t does sound like we will "just have to deal with it", eh, and hope somebody (a guard..) will take pity and change our visits around.

Could you please tell me what it is like when you go in? I have only been to supermaxes up to now and that is a rather shocking experience, as if I were the criminal. Is that different in the Wynne unit?

I have been told I can take $10,- worth of quarters with me, is this correct? Can I buy something for my friend too?

Is it easy to get taxis in Huntsville? (I donot have a dricers license, so I can't rent a car)

see, a million questions, I will stop for now, again..:)
thanks for your help!

Wynne unit is a little more relaxed than some of the supermax's.
There are contact visits for a start, so it is much less clinical an atmosphere.
Make sure you have $20 in coins before you go, there is nowhere to get change.
You will need valid picture ID (passport is sufficient for non US citizens).
Do not have anything with you other than your change in a clear plastic purse or ziplock bag, your ID and your hotel keycard if you can't leave it at the hotel.
You have already arranged your contact visits so you may just want to ring the unit on the Thu or Fri a.m. just to check. (Sometimes they get left off the weekend lists!!)

You will not be given a contact visit unless you have been approved by the warden. It's as simple as that. A friend of mine once got one by mistake, but it was rectified very quickly.

There are a couple of Taxi services in Huntsville -
Reliable Cab Co - (936) 295 3606
Redtop Taxi (936) 295 8294

Bear in mind that you may want to arrange payment before your journey as you will have to get them to pick you up after your visit as well. Give the office a call and explain what you need, they will be used to this kind of fare as Huntsville is a prison town and lots of families need cabs to the units. I can't remember if there is a payphone at the unit, so that's why I suggest you arrange a pick up time in advance.

That's all I can think of at the moment, I'm sure some of our other members will have more info for you.

well it looks like you got most of your information that you may need. There are no payphones at wynne so the suggestion of you making arrangements before you go is a great idea. this is my journey when I go to visit...i drive up get my car searched and then they give me a red pass. After I park then I walk up to the "gatehouse" where you give them your red pass, coins and id. after they scan me they give me a printout. you have to go through a door and two gates that are very close together (they are lock controlled by the gate guard) then there will be a small building to your left which is where you will be going. Give the guards at the desk your id and they hopefully get call for your loved one. I have waited for as long as 45 min. there are two icecream machines, vending machines and drink machines. don't get too excited though because they never all work :). just ask the guards which is contact (it is actually the one closest to where you wait to be called for you loved one)

hope you have a great visit!

Kristen, Rach, thank you SO much or all this info!! I feel a lot more relaxed about my visits now! It is always strange to go to a new place (I have never been to Texas before) and then to a new prison aswell!
I have printed all your posts and will take them with me. I have a cellphone that works in the US aswell, so I think I will be ok with the taxi and otherwise I will make those arrangements as you suggested!
If I come up with more questions, I will come back and bother you some more.. :) But for now: thanks!
Irma:thumbsup:

Do not take your cellphone with you. You will not be allowed to take it in to visit and there is nowhere to leave it.
A pain in the butt, I know, but them's the rules!! lol

I go to the Ellis unit by Greyhound sometimes and there is now only one cab company in Huntsville (Reliable Taxi) and they charge $50 roundtrip to take you to the unit and then the lady who runs it will add 30 minutes to your visit time because sometimes it can take as long as 30 minutes for them to come out.

I have a brother that has been on wynne for 13 years in ad-seg, he is supposed to go to GRAD at the end of july, and begin his 2 years of being extra special good so he can make parole in dec.2010.I have only been to see him 3 or 4 times(transportation, money, son at smith unit, ect...) anyway we are closer than ever and he has really cleared his mind and done nothing but positive things for his future since he went in. we lost mom and dad since he was gone and I believe he has finally grown and smartened UP!!!! now if we could get my son to wake the f#*k up we would be batting a thousand!!

My boyfriend has been transferred to diff unit’s several times and pretty much likes the wynne unit. He stated that it’s laid back and if he just stays to himself he is all set. He explained that the dayroom is very loud. There are Units that are very ruff.

My husband is ast the Wynne Unit, He's been there a minute... I feel what you are saying about trying to go see your love one* I don't drive either, I havve had to find others traveling that way ( I have found people that has dropped me off and I've waited for them to come from their visits at other Units)now, I actually ride with someone that actually has a love one also at the aWynne Unit, she is a blessing (do to all the crazy weather we have been having, I don't have to wait outside)...I would still do it, but now I don't have to.
Our love one's just really don't get it---How much we do and go through to see them for that 2 hours!!!!
But you are at the end ... your man is coming home!
Jay is up next now for review...wehave to wait and see what they decide this year.....wish us luck!
Stay strong and let us know when your man comes home***I love good endings!

There was no visit this past weekend due to flu virus.Im from humble tx about an 1hr away. He says they have better conditions there and he participates in the work programs in place such as forklift driving in the warehouse. Hopes this helps someonne

Me and my man are not married are related he was in holiday unit.I asked the warden in a letter to allow us visitation because I was his only means of support. Before I knew it he was transfer to a trustee camp at Wynne which allowed us to have contact visits. They are extremely nice and sometime go out their way to make your visit smooth.I go every other weekend if someone interested.
