Has any of you heard from your inmate (relative or friend) about them being mistreated by COs? LIke Cos picking on them or treating the entire housing area like cr_p. My BF sometimes cant call because they dont take the phones out, he complains that the COs sometimes ruin their beddings and go through their buckets for no reason.
Is it worth filing a complaint or will it just put my BF in more trouble?

HELPPPPPPPPPPPP!!! Now my BF is in the Emergency room at Elmhurst Hospital. I saw him last night at about 11pm, some lady from the emergency room contacted me and told me that my BF asked her to call me, I know he wasnt supposed to do that but it's good that he did.
HE has a neck brace on and is all bruised up. He claims that the CO's at C-76 beat the living daylights out of him and he got thrown down a set of steps and he fell unconsious that is why he got sent to Elmhurst Hospital. I saw him there last night and the COs pushed me away.
What do I do? How Do I complain about this? I don't want this to happen to anyone. I read the News about Captain Graham and Warden Lewis and I feel it is happening all over again.

I would contact an attorney and then go to the NYC DOC site and send an email making a complaint.
Try to visit him as soon as you can and have him write a statement to what exactly happened and to name the officers if he knows.
I would not let them get away with that but make sure you have all the facts first. I hope he recovers quickly so you can see him soon!

I did complain about the COs at EMTC like three days before this happened. I did not dare leave his name and number because I did not want him to get in more trouble.
He is moved to C-74 now and the internal affairs came and took his statement and took pictures of his body. I think that my knowing and visiting him at elmhurst hospital got the COS scared a little because I wasnt supposed to know and see him in the condition he was in at Elmhurst hospital. I am a nurse and I know my way around the hospital and by flashing my ID, I was able to navigate around the hospital with no problem and got to see him.
I came back to see him yesterday morning at the Emergency room (yes he was there for more than 24 hours, over 3 X-ray and cat scan procedures with NO FOOD) and The captain HANNAH cornered me and spoke to me in a very pleasant way and asked me nicely to leave the hospital. I think at this point they realized that they have a witness to the cruelty they've done to my BF and that all they can do was be nice.
I am filing a complaint to the Department of Investigations. They are the ones responsible for having Capt Sherman and Dep Lewis arrested for a beating that happened in October last year. I will make sure a full-blown investigation happens this time. I have not only anger for the Cos that treated and beat my BF up, I also have anger for giving me the worst visit experience everytime Im there to see him.

good for you. file a complaint, i know i would!!!! by having these COs arrested you not only get justice for your man, but also for the other inmates and families of inmates that worry so much about stuff like that!!!
BTW, check my thread in the "i need to vent" section, called "rikers is disgusting" ;)

I'm sorry you're going through this Vanessa. I hope these COs get what they deserve and I think you're doing the right thing by fighting them on this. I'm glad you got to see him. Good luck!

WOW. I'm sorry to hear that sweetie. Unfortunately I know Captain Hannah personally and she can be quite a character. Had I read this earlier I would have advised you to not call the facility. Trust me, if you call and you speak to the control room supervisor about mistreatment, they will investigate and do something about it. But you nor your man will like what they do. They may move him to a different housing area and torment him. Like I have said in other posts CO's just like any other profession have a built in explaination for everything. They can say they did XY an Z for the safety and security of the insititution.
Uses of force from staff on inmates are taken very seriously. Dont get it twisted. They get their fair share but you dont hear about the 90 days suspensions or the losses of pensions or the restitiution they have to pay to the inmates for the rest of their lives.
I would have advised you to contact a lawyer and let him do all the legwork for you. The lawyer would have put in to the courts a request to transfer your man out of the jurisdiction like to Nassau County until the case was resolved. There is no way that your man will live problem free on Rikers Island or anywhere in the NYC system with a pending case. The City does not play when lawsuits are brought on. If this is your course of action, you will almost likely get what you are seeking. The city does not want to be liable for an office that flew off the handle.
Another thing you have to remember is that Corrections is very different from NYC Police. There is no impenetrable blue wall of silence. In most of the serious situations that make the paper, there is always a weak link and they lean on that individual until they crack. Once they crack, they all come falling down.
