A message from Judy Greenspan, of California Prison Focus:
I don't mean to rain on your and our parade. But while the proposed regulations seem great for family members, if passed, they will severely limit the ability of advocacy and legal organizations like California Prison Focus, Justice Now, California Coalition for Women Prisoners, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, Capital Appellate Project and even the Prison Law Office to visit prisoners. Under the new regulations, apparently only "certified" paralegals and "certified" legal investigators will be allowed in the prison under sponsorship by their attorney. And, apparently, the new regs will only allow prisoners to be visited by attorneys of records. Oh yes, and for law students, they can only go in to prison when their supervising attorney is part of the visit. There are apparently other claptraps in the new regulations guaranteed to keep CPF and other organizations out.
We have very little time to respond to these new regulations. I urge you to read the parts pertaining to attorney visits.
Not only do we only have until August 9 to respond, but also there will not be a public hearing on these new regulations.
From Chris Jackson:
We have to support the various groups, LIKE California Prison Focus, California Coalition for Women Prisoners, and Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, being able to have the same access that we do, as so many prisoners have no one else but the groups to visit or fight for them. Get ready to write again! We only have until 5pm on Aug. 9th to get our comments in. We also need to be sure & express our thanks for their acknowledgment in the re-write of our previous objections & requests.
From Heidi Jones:
Since organizations like CPF, CCWP, LSPWC and others are always ready to help the families as well as inmates; it would be inexcusable not to support them at this time. After all, everyone benefits from these dedicated people, not just the inmates! I know for a fact that without these organizations we would not have half of the information we need to fight abuse, medical neglect and all other ills within the prison system. To help them is to help our loved ones! Please send an e-mail or letter to the Regulation & Policy Management Branch as soon as possible to oppose the changes in the attorney visiting section. Tell them to NOT take full time employees of attorneys of the list of authorized representatives.
Thank You!
Letters should be addressed to:
