I am new to Prisontalk and found it by accident. My brother is serving 72 months at USP Terre Haute IN. This is very difficult because we are in Memphis, TN. We were stunned when they transfered him there, due to the fact that he is a paraplegic. Anyway I need information on the following two things.

First the most critical: our mother has terminal cancer and is under hospice care, she only has maybe a few more weeks on this earth. Can anyone tell me how we can get a furlough for him to come and visit? I have called the number on the BOP website and can't get anyone to return my calls. My mother's hospice social worker and nurse both have also tried to contact the prison with no avail.

Secondly, he was told last year that he was eligible for a transfer closer to home, but as of today nothing. What can we do to speed up this process?

You can contact Religious Services at the prison and request the furlough. Most often, furloughs are only allowed for funeral services, and then it's not even a furlough, the inmate must be escorted, at his expense, by BOP personel. There is polcy in place to allow this, but it is RARE to see the BOP grant these.

As for a transfer, he can request one from his case manager at his team meeting after he has been conduct-clear for 18 months, but since Terre Haute is less than 500 miles from Memphis, it will be rare that they move him.

Good luck!

i am not sure if it's any closer, but there is a fed medical center in Lexington, Ky, i wonder if they'd let him go there since he's paraplegic...but i dont know if someone specifically has to be ill to go to the medical center.

i know nothing about furloughs so that's all i can really help with
