Generally speaking, if he just went in, he'll go through some sort of an orientation period. They'll explain rules to him, do some health screening (physical & mental) and make some judgements about what programs he needs and which facility can meet his needs best. The transition to prison is difficult and communication with family will help him a lot. If you're not a big letter-writer and can't afford to put a lot of money on his account for phone calls, try sending greeting cards or even just post cards. Any reminder that someone is thinking of him will help his attitude a lot and give him hope.
