View Full Version : Benefits of out of state transfers?
OK, I got a letter from my bf and he mentioned that he has heard they offer better programs if he were to request an out of state transfer, he is currently in recept @ nksp. He said he has been thinking about it (I can't understand why but if its better for him then its ok) Does anyone know the benefits and if it were to cut some of his time. He has no family in another state. He was having a bad day I think when he wrote that letter. I'm writing back to him today. Give my suggestions also on what you would tell your man. (please), thanks girls.

aliferzwife 07-21-2007, 02:36 PM There are no benefits that's why only 400 men out of 172,000 volunteered to be shipped. There is a propaganda film that the prisons here show, but all the guys know it's bullcrap.
They are now forcing men to go and they aren't going calmly. These are private prisons they are sent to. No state oversight, so they do what they want. The guards aren't real C/O's and make minimum wage and have no real training. The corporations who own these private prisons have had many lawsuits for poor conditions, lousy healthcare, etc. They
Phone calls have to be earned - they are not a privilege. Some of these prisons don't allow packages to be sent in either. One of the prisons had a huge riot a few months ago by inmates sent from Arizona forcibly.
It's sad to admit, but he's MUCH better off here. Friday they forcibly sent 400 of our inmates to a private prison in Mississippi!!
MountainMom 07-21-2007, 02:58 PM I have a different opinion and I'm from a totally different state. So...find out more from the people that have familiy in North Kern. The prisons in VT are completlely BORING and frankly a very slow and arduous process. Our prisoners get sent to KY and OK to private prisons that are much better. They aren't locked in all the time, there's more rec, there are pool tables etc. and some of the guys are asking to be transferred there right now. But, the phone calls are much more expensive and visits would be very rare. See what you can find out from him and the others, you may get a very differnt answer.
aliferzwife 07-21-2007, 05:18 PM I think most of the inmates in this state would LOVE to be in a "boring" prison. The riots in the past 6 months say otherwise as far as men enjoying these "resort" prisons. So do the lawsuits and the 3 deaths of our inmates within the past 4 months in these places.
I also feel it's immoral to FORCE men away from their families for YEARS to prisons 3,000 miles away. Our state needs to deal with what they've done wrong that allowed 174,000 inmates to be crammed into prisons built for half that many. Outsourcing our problems seems neat and clean - out of sight out of mind - except for the families left behind who can't afford to visit for years and years, will only be able to accept a fraction of the phone calls due to increased costs. Won't be able to have ombudsmen, healthcare hotlines, wardens, etc to call as we can now. If you force men away from their only support systems, they WILL rebel - what will they have to lose??
I would be insane if they sent my husband away from me. Maybe men who have no one and don't care about phone calls or packages.
MountainMom 07-22-2007, 01:40 PM aliferzwife- I understand where you are coming from and I hope you didn't misunderstand me. I sure wasn't saying that the prison where my friend is is a "resort" as I believe you probably won't find anyone saying that prison is a walk in the park- boring or not. Nomatter what size the prison is, nowhere is truly safe.
I do agree that sending inmates away from their friends and family isn't the way to prevent recidivism. However, the DOC has needed a band-aid to try to control the overcrowding all over our country. I agree that these men and women need their support networks but as we know, it boils down to the bottom dollar. It costs the state about half of what it would if the inmates were kept in state. All that being said, I would like to see more work responsibilities being offered and frankly enforced upon the inmates. Just sitting locked in your cell for 14 hours a day only able to watch tv is no form of treatment. If we want our loved ones to come home any better off, they need support and discipline.
aliferzwife 07-23-2007, 08:18 AM Agreed, however there is no room for vocational training. And sending these 5-8,000 inmates out of state is going to do nothing to alleviate the overcrowding when there are currently 17,000 sleeping on triple bunks in gyms, classrooms and hallways. This is a "feel good" for ignorant conservative voters.
The only way - at his point - to solve the massive overcrowding in California and to reinstate rehabilitation programs here, is to release at least 50,000 low level, non-violent offenders who have served a normal sentence already, to refom the sentencing in this state, and to eliminate parole for petty criminals.
Then maybe in about 5 years, inmates here can actually go to school, or take some vocational classes and actually have a chance at staying out.
Just my 2 cents though. LOL
