When volunteering at Rikers Island..do you have to go thru the whole process like you are visiting? Can u have cell phones and other things? I know you can be any age to volunteer, but will they allow you to enter the island if you are sixtean..by taking the Q101R? Also, once you get on the island thru the 101R, can u walk to the building u want to get to or do u have to wait for a bus??

need help..thanks

Hi, I volunteer at Rikers. I'm not sure if my experience is the same as everyones, but when I go (I go every week) I go through the other entrance that is to the left of the visitor's entrance. You still can not bring in cell phones you have to put them into a locker. Once I get through the main gates, I go to Sprungs, and need to go through a metal detector, have my bag x-rayed, and thats about it. I don't wait for a bus, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to but the place i go is 100 ft. away so why not walk? And, I take the Q101R to get to Rikers still. Hope this helps.

Its now the Q100 to Rikers Island. If you volunteer you are treated like an officer almost. You are given an ID card and the whole nine yards. I doubt someone that young will be able to volunteer though. You have to take the Route Bus to your specific facility. If you will be working at RNDC (Formerly ARDC or the adolescent building) you can walk.
