I do wish John was closer like Newton then it would only be a 25 min drive compared to the 1and a half to 2 hour drive. He started out at Oakdale for a month then got moved to Clarinida. But the good thing about him being there is at least i can visit him . At Oakdale only family members can visit. Since we are not married I couldn't visit him. I didnt get to see him for 2 months after he got sentenced. Because I think it took me all most 3 weeks to get approved to see him . Im so happy im going to see him next sunday .:wave:

I wasnt sure how the oakdales rules were, I thought they were there like 90days. Prolly got moved early because of the overcrowding. Mine is still in county, been since 8/18, so Im still waitting for the oakdale trip and beyond. He had trial comming up on the 27th, but I am told it may be longer than that. I cannot see him because of a no contact order that the state has put on, but have a hearing this comming wednesday to hopefully get that removed. Feel free to pm me anytime, Id be interested in your story, I just wish more Iowans were here, because they arent I havent been able to get to many questions answered. Im glad you are finally getting to see your guy, It sucks not being able too.

He should have stayed longer at Oakdale but he had some problams with other inmates because his father is a ex cop so they moved him . Iowa prison system is something else i learned a lot these 7 month since all this stuff happend. Right now he is lock down because some guy decide to beat him up because John had alarm clock and John had put it away because his cell mate kept knocken it on the floor. Even though John didnt start the fight are hit the guy he's being punished he's getten the same punishment the guy who stared is getten. It'S a bunch of s##t. All John do was called the Co to tell them they were fighting and they both got draged from there cells in handcuffs. All this stuff is stressing me out . But im trying to keep my head up because it has to get better right?

Jeez...I hate to hear that kind of stuff. I worry about that, Dont want anymore time added than has to be. Is this his first time in? How long does he have to go? Ya hold your head up, he will learn to take care of himself. God 7 months already for you, I just cant even imagine that far ahead yet.
Especially since I dont know how long Im looking at yet. Atleasst you have a visit comming up, so thats a good thing.
Im and giving your My BS sign for the incident he was in, cause thats what I think about that ;)

His term is 10 to 15 years but when u walk threw the gates it gets knocked in half thats if you stay out out of trouble his release date is Oct 2007 but were hopeing sooner .He's got 2 lawyers his appeal lawyer and his new criminal lawyer . His mom fired his state appointed lawyer because he mess up if we would had the lawyer we have now the judge would have given the probation the DA said they would give John but know she threw the book at him. Heck at the sentence we all thought he was going to get probation but the judge changed her mind. Lets just say i really lost it the court room when i heard 15 years . Ill never forget that day. April 9 what a messed up day . All this court trials have been going on since the end of nov 2003. I just hope i can make it threw all of this his mom has really been there for me as i for her.

i lived there for two summers! :) i wish i could direct you to some stellar spots or to a cheap place to stay or something, but i've got nothing! ....it's clarinda, iowa!

Iam422-are you suggesting that Iowa towns are hick towns LOL ....I had to laugh, cause I know what ya mean. I live in Dubuque, and I wouldnt call us a hick town, but I do know that alot of towns in Iowa are :D

Well my visit yesterday went great. I miss him so darn much. Those 2 hours that I spend with him always go to dam fast. I really loved the kiss and hug before and after the visit. I can't wait tell are next visit. I hope it;s soon because i miss like crazey even though I just sall him yesterday:wave:

Nightmagic, I sure hope that your John is ok. I am also sorry to hear about him being in the hole. It isn't right, but that's prison. From what I know (& that isn't all that much) Clarinda is a fairly laid back place. Meaning it isn't as violent as some of the others. My understanding is Clarinda is like Newton in that it has both a medium and a minimun prison. If that's correct, which one is John at?

The other thing I am wondering about. You said that he got 10-15 years and that when you go in it's knocked in half. That was true and could be true for John depending on when he went in. I know this because we were afraid my son would have to serve 8 1/2 years instead of the 5 years on a 10year sentence. The law in Iowa was changed in 1999. Anyone sentenced after, I think it was june or July, of '99 will serve 85% of their time. That could be doing all their time in or a mix of in and with parole. If they were sentenced before that time in '99 they served 1/2 their time, whether all of it in or a mix of in & parole. Am I making sense here? Some legislatures are trying to get it down to 75% of the sentence, but it did not make it out of committee and will have to wait until next year.

Were you aware of any of this, or is this the first you've heard of it. I sure don't want to give you news that will hurt you but I believe in having all the facts so that it can best be dealt with.

Binky's Gal- I lived in Dubuque for a summer, too! Right off of Greenview (is that right? it's been a couple years now!) Avenue. My favorite thing about Dubuque is that it is not too far from Galena, IL!

Did you ladies know you can order books to be sent to the prison? I felt so silly...I didn't know this! But I found out and sent some to aaron a couple of days ago. I went directly to the Barnes and Noble store and they couldn't ?!/?!, so then I just did it online.

This reminds me, what can anyone tell me about ordering stuff from commisary for them? Can we do that? Or can we only put money in their account? I'm just wondering, no hurry.

Yep im a east sider live by the fair grounds.Wall his badge saids 2007 this case is still tied up in appeals and re consideration. . He was taking victim impact classes tell that butt head decide to flip out on John and beat him up. Heck after they took him and the other guy out of the cell it took them a hour to find his glass eye . He was hit hard on the side of the face for his eye to go flying. Now he's having problams with the plate that holds the eye in and ther doing nothing about it. Im so afraid that his bodey is going to reject the plate and he'll have to have surgry on his eye agin

For commisary i send a money order to the warden i write it like something like this: John/ warden

And the address
For as ordering from the commisary i dont know heck I cant even get the web site. Heck in the commisary book a see thew walkman is 70 .00 but they swiched commisary companys. They can't have cd payers because of lasers.So im looking for a see threw walkman that has a web sight since we cant send him things It has to come from the store. And his birthday is Next month and i have no idea what to get him . A card and extra mony for his commisary. But i wanted to do something special for his birthday . He'll be the big 30 on Nov24.

I wish I could answer more of your questions, but out of all of us, it seems I am the newest to it all. But, as more Iowans find there way here, You can bet your butts I will answer anything I know and help as many as I can. So for you older (lol i know Im not the youngest) I mean older as in being in with the system, I want to thank everyone who has helped me so far, you all have been very helpful.

Iam422- Greenview Ave. LOL I think you mean Grandview Ave. Its a nice area of town. And you are right. Galena is only about 25 mins from DBQ. You say you lived here a summer, going to school?? Just curious.
And from what I read on other posts, your Fiance, Aaron (right?) can send you a commisary list. And I think only he can order from there, but you can send $$$ to his account for that.
Its nice to know about being able to send books, I have heard this before too. But as I said before Im still sitting in limbo till i get all the rules on everything. AT this rate I'll be lucky to have everything I need by Christmas :sigh:

well my day got a little better got a letter today. I can't beleive it got here so fast he sent it out monday . After reading the letter i miss him even more. He said he loved are visit but they never long enough and that he cant wait tell he see's me agin. Heather you'll get a letter soon. The letters keep me going as the letters i write him keep his spirts up. That reminds me I have to bye stamps tonight. A guy in his cell collects stamps so John has been giving him the stamps off my letters. There Bat stamps. I should pick a differnt stamp im getting bored with Bats lol

What I know about commisary. It may be different where your guys are at, but the ones I know (Mt. Pleasant, Oakdale -not the reception part- Ft Dodge, Newton, Ft. Madison) you can ONLY put $$ on their accounts for them to buy from the commissary. We can send books, but the publisher or book store must send it for us. We can not send them anything directly. Lam422, I think you got hold of a misinformed clerk, but I could be wrong. Most book stores will mail to Correctional Facilities.
Tami, you are correct. Anything they buy in commissary is double what it costs out here, everything from toothpaste to tennis shoes. I'll be surprised if you can find or see a copy of their commissary list.

OH!! Tami regarding John's glass eye. The only way to get anything to happen is be vocal (politely) and keep calling. He needs to keep putting in kites for medical attention. If you need to or if you think not enough is being done, there is an ombudsman (sp?) that is an inmate advocate. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Don't let this rest. I don't want to give you undo concern, but I believe in knowing all the facts and facing the truth head on. The medical care in prison is , well, let's say less than desireable. One more thing. If you are the g/f your voice doesn't count with them. It has got to be his family and himself that speak up.

When I sall him Sunday he Said he has put several kites in but they haven't done anything . I talked to his mom Monday and she was going to talk to his counseler this week if knothing is done. I know 5 weeks ago she talked to the warden about the fight and his eye . But all they have given 4 his eye so far is Neosporin. His mom does all the dealing with his lawyers and the prison staff. I've only talked to a CO a couple times . But the one's iv'e talked to were real nice and helpful. His mom called last night and told me he got his phone privileges back so he'll be calling tonight . I wasn't home when he tried to call last night. That was a bummer. So I cant wait tell tonight to hear his voice.

Oj i know she will she cares and loves her son very nuch despite the mistakes that have landed him in prison.Im always telling John to tell his mom how much he appreciate her and how much he loves her. She's the one who's paying for for his new lawyer and sending him money for the phone and commissary. Like his mom Im going threw money like water. The phone money kills me and commissary has been a killer these last 6 weeks since he was in lock down he could not work so me in his mom have been sending extra money

ladies, i'm in kind of an emotional silly silo right now. i've done everything i could from the outside and assume i'll know if there's any chance of aaron getting out this year by november 3rd. every day i check the bop website as if it is magically going to show me something that wasn't there the day before. i'm scared that he's not coming home. i miss him and some things are getting really hard without him. i'm running myself ragged with my job and with ministry service but i'm still okay. it's basically just the emotions of this waiting time to find out if the bop will even look at aaron for interview. i don't like this.

Please rest!!Remember that PM when I shared with you how a woman at church said that my son would be release early? He was released early, I just had to wait through 3 bop reviews to see it. Our God is still in control.

Son, should be done at 12:01am 10/27/03. I will still hold my breath, because I still have that funny feeling there will be yet another screw up. It isn't has strong a feeling as the last time, but it is still there.

I got a counter now....I still havent heard to much yet, still no letter Dahm IT (lol) but I did find out his outdate. For a 5 year sentence I thought it was pretty good. His aunt called right to Oakdale and they told her, so thats how I know ;)
Release date 1/26/2006 seems like a long time to me, but It better than thinking i was gonna be pushing 40! I'll only be 36 going on 37. So some good news. Im nort sure if its possible for anymore time to come off that, and god forbid if anything gets added.

Well I got to talk to John last night and tonight and got another letter yesterday. He's back on his cell block. And he's going to Iowa City next week for his eye.About time The warden got tired of his mom calling him lol. Im so happy being able to talkto him 2 days in a row. okay...this weekend i saw aaron twice! i went both saturday and sunday. i love him! he told me he talked to his incompetent counselor on friday (long stories i don't care to post), and he is at level 6 for risk assessment, which means he will only need 3 votes for parole or 2 votes for work release! woo hoo! i think this is good news. it's the best possibility, so how can that not be good?

also, this weekend, i got a cat. he is lovely and wonderful and we get along fantastically! so, if you hear me talking about mr. darby, you know whom i speak of. i guess instead of saying i got a cat, i should say mr. darby got a human. :)

Tami, I meant to tell you (but I forgot) in my last post that I am glad and relieved that your guy is getting some medical attention for his eye. The fact that he is going to Iowa City says that 1)his mom did some loud squawking. 2)they are taking it seriously.

My one piece of advice to you and the mom is, even though he is being sent to Iowa City when he comes back you still must keep on top of them. The doctors may say this is what he needs or what must be done and you will need to keep a watch on the prison to make sure they follow through with what the doctors say.

Hi everyone! I am from Iowa! West Des Moines. I am new to all of this but I am learning. I have posted questions on some of the threads. My daughter, well she isn't really, but I have known her since she was 14-she is 26 now. I have been there for her through thick and thin. So I am almost like a mother! She is at Oakdale right now. It has been 7 days today. I jsut rec my first letter two days ago and I was so HAPPPPPPPPPPY! It is going to be a long road for her because she has depression issues but I know that the Lord will see her through all of this because He has BIG plans for her life! It is nice to listen to others and get comfort from all of you! She left Polk Co. on Dec 26th and I hadn't heard from her. I was getting worried. Does it normally take 30 days to go through Oakdale? Binky's Gal has been very helpful, thanks soooooo much! I went back on some of the threads and I saw your picture when you was telling people about your ring. COngradulations! Hi again all~ Well my first day on the new job was good. My back and feet are killing me, but I'll get use to it.

To answer the question "why were we denied", it was becasue I am considered "Victim of the Crime" . What the BS part is, I was approved, then they discovered it!!
I am calling Ricky's councelor tommarrow am to see how the appeals process works, so all is not lost yet,, Keep your fingers crossed guys, there is still hope ;)

I have a friend who works in the corrections dept. here and she talked to the head honcho and found out that Aaron is 5th on the waiting list for the work release center! and that he should be home by the middle of February!

How great is that?! I'm just bouncing off the walls and I wish Aaron had money on the phone account and would be able to call soon so I can tell him, but he'll probably have to wait until the mail gets there in a couple of days!

I'm so very happy! Everything is really coming together.

Hello everyone, I'm also from Iowa (Dubuque). Just joined about 2 weeks ago and now it's the first place I check every time I sign on! My fiance was just sentenced in Federal Court last Thursday to 69 months. Not sure where he will go but he's been in County Jail for 8 months so he's ready to go anywhere to start his time. I live in Missouri and fiancee is at Ft. Madison ISP. We both came from Corning, IA (talk about your hick towns.....LOL)! I just got approved for visits and hope to get there by 11-21-04 if not sooner. The waiting is killing me! I got my engagement Ring today so that was pretty cool! I also got my surprise (I posted somewhere else about the clues) It was a stuffed Tiger. He knows I collect them so he's a sweetheart! Still don't know a release date. I can't get him to go talk to his counselor about it. I'm glad everyone is starting to get the Iowa forum going again. I was starting to think that I was the only one here...........lol We are getting ready for Post conviction but I don't hold out hope on any of that anymore. It's to unbearable if it's negative. So I just look at it like we are in for the long haul and if it does go our way then It's a bonus...Got keep my sanity and his! Love hearing from you all! Please keep Posting

hey -- I actually live in florida now, just moved here from iowa. my guy is in prison back in iowa. This is my first time dealing with anything prison related so its already hard but then the fact that i just moved far away makes it harder. If you guys have any questions i'll try to help out but i dont know a lot about prisons there. i have a lot of questions myself -- lynne

:cuffs: Hi! I'm Jan. I live in Estherville, which NOBODY has ever heard of, but most Iowans have heard of Okoboji or the Iowa Great Lakes, I live about 20 minutes from there. My husband is in Fort Dodge, his mandatory is up in April of 2006; his discharge is July of 2008. This is his second time around ~ I met and married him while he was in Rockwell City almost seven years ago. He discharged after over 13 years, was out for almost 4 full years. We're all in the same boat here. It's nice to FINALLY see some more IOWANS posting. Let's keep in touch!:grouphug:

He's been there since the 22nd of September. Before that he was in Anamosa - 250 miles away (one way) from here, so this is better, distance ways anyhow. I go visit every Monday and Thursday]

Thats good you get to visit so much! I'm still working on getting to visit. do you know how long it generally takes to find out if you're approved our not for visitation?

Hi all, I'm new here too and my fiancee is in Fort Dodge as well. He went in when I was 7 months pregnant. Our son is now 3 weeks old and has yet to see his daddy. I was wondering the same thing as far as if anyone knows how long it takes to get approved for visits and what some of the visitation rules are.

My baby is in Newton Correctional facility. He has been down for a year now and he just sent in his reconsideration papers, so he could possibly be home next month. We're hoping and praying, but trying not to get our hopes up too high.

Hi. I'm also from Iowa, and live in the Des Moines area. My boyfriend is in IMCC and will then be at Newton, or at least this is what we are told. There is will have his parole revocation hearing and be sent to ?. It's hard to say, I jst have to wait and see.

i am from delaware co. and my guy is done at mt. pleasant corr. fac. in oct.

I am from Iowa too! Put me on the list! My husband is in Fort Dodge and will HOPEFULLY be paroled next June, otherwise his discharge is July of 2008.

I'm here in Iowa City. My man is being sentanced to 10 years man. 7 years. He is still in county and has been there for 4 months now we are waiting for him the get where they are sending him. I just can't wait to hug him. It's been a long time.:rolleyes:

Hi everyone, I just moved from Ottumwa, to Burlington. I have been a part of PTO since I got released from prison, my husband keeps going back....is that a hint he likes it better there then at home?....hmmmmm anything i can do to help let me know...seems like i've been doing this iowa prison crap for the past 10-12 years!

Hello, I am also from Iowa. This is my first time posting a message so be patient with me. My son was sentenced to Oakdale on Friday. He may be transported on his 21st birthday. I am so at a loss. Not even sure what I want to know. Any information you can pass on to me would be so appreciated. I don't know what to expect or what he should expect. How do they decide what prison he ends up at? Right now I just don't feel like I know anything other than my heart is breaking. Thanks, Tina

Just a quick update from me...My baby is still in Newton. He put in his request for a reconsideration on August 10th. It is now the middle of October and we still have heard nothing. Not even a denial. So we are now just have our minds set on 18 more months at the worst. We have heard that they do not have to give him a yes or no answer, but then we have also heard that they do. If anyone knows anything about this and could help, please let me know. Thanks and God Bless.

I am from northeast Iowa and my fiance is in Mt.Pleasant like 3 hours from here and it sucks being that far away from him. He gets to come home in a lil more then 22 months and I can't wait!!

I am not sure I am posting correctly. I didn't see where to start a new thread. My son was transported to Oakdale this morning. I have some questions for anybody that has been through the process or has a loved one that has. I feel like I should be doing something and have no idea what. Do I send money now for him to be able to call me? Do I need to contact them for certain information? HELP??? Will I now have no contact at all until he is done at Oakdale and moved to where his actual term will be spent? Any helpful information would be appreciated. Thanks, Tina:confused:

I just found out my man is being transfered sometime soon. They haven't told him where, but I think he's going to Ft. Dodge too. So if he does, I'll let ya know as soon as I do. Keep me in mind if you find anything out.

I was told its a nice prison (well as far as prisons go). And that it is by Souix City and its easy find. Thats about all I know
