View Full Version : If YOU were the Warden at Holman...........
Bookworm1 05-30-2007, 12:59 AM If YOU were the warden at Holman, what changes would you make and why?
Each person name ONE thing at a time, and then allow the NEXT person to have a turn, and so on! Like we are doing with SnakeCharmer's post, why prisons suck...........
I will begin!
I would change the assanine rule that denies inmates in seg or the hole access to books, because reading is something that should be ENCOURAGED, NOT prohibited! Basic reading and writing skills are essential, in order for one to obtain a job, upon release! It also gives the inmate something constructive to do with his time, and so much more! Reading is a wonderful thing! It can open up a world of new possibilities for inmates!
If I were warden at Holman, I would change...........
Let's here it ladies!

mia_101 05-30-2007, 01:47 AM You took mine!
Bookworm1 05-30-2007, 05:01 AM LOL! Oh come on now! Surely there are other rules in place, that you disagree with, and would change if you had the power to do so! I know I have a gazillion ideas! LOL As far as I am concerend, there is little(if anything!) that Culliver does right! I know, I know! I'm a meanie! LOL

max*b*free 05-30-2007, 06:00 AM I would allow inmates to purchase any non-get high spices and herbs they wanted to season the food with. I don't care what they call it, "round brown" is still "round brown".
Well I would change the color they wear to the Khaki color that my son wore when he was in Mississippi. I had much rather they got to wear their own clothes but since that's not going to change I would have to say khaki clothes. The prison whites look so worn out and yellow. BTW Bob Barker owns the company that makes the uniforms at the prison in Tutwiler, Mississippi. I think it would boost their morale some too, Oh paint those prison wallls and do the pet program to take in pets! Ok I'll stop. LOL
What would you change?
Bookworm1 05-30-2007, 06:50 AM Some great ideas so far! I think I would allow the inmates with some artistic talent, or whoever wanted to participate for that matter, to paint the walls, perhaps a mural, depicting images that had some special significance to each of the inmates!
And the pet therapy program would be a WONDERFUL idea too! My beau tells me that there are some stray kittens/cats that have taken up residence at the prison, and that the inmates take good care of them(sneaking them food etc!). But the Warden has a big problem with this, for some strange reason, and threatens them with disciplinary action! Grouch!
Caring for a pet could teach them responsibility, as well as empathy! How is that a bad thing????? Growl.
And of course, serve better food! I hear it is absolutely TERRIBLE, and fit for the birds!

Bookworm1 05-30-2007, 06:52 AM Oh, I like the blue prison uniforms! Blue is my favorite color! :) But if I were Warden, I would hold an "election", and let the inmates decide! Give them a sense of having some control over their environment and their lives! In prison, all of their choices are made for them, right down to when to go to bed and when to rise in the morning! If they are EVER going to succeed in the outside world, as independent adults, they need to be allowed to make SOME decisions for themselves! Damn we're good huh? Let's fire Culliver, and move on in! LOL

SnakeCharmer 05-30-2007, 07:01 AM I'd change it so that when they go on the "WALK" for one hour, they wouldn't have to go to a CAGE that is even smaller than their cell, Let them go to the yard,or gym to work out, and for a longer time amount, once in the morning, and then again in the afternoon.
CS loves JW 05-30-2007, 07:05 AM I am LMAO at this thread, not because it is funny, but because I had to speak to Warden Culliver this week personally about an issue, and was so pleasantly surprised at how well he treated me and I am SOOO outrageously grateful for his help. I wrote a letter to my baby and said, "If anyone tries to bad-mouth the Warden again, I'm gonna give 'em my two cents!!!" So, there's my :twocents: . I am not ready to fire him. :-)
I would, however, like to see changes in the system. I'd like to see work programs for ALL the inmates, not just the ones in population. In the state that I currently live in, the inmates on death row are allowed to live and work with the general population, provided they are "classified" as being able to do so, and I think this is a great idea. I'd also like to see educational programs and opportunities for the guys on the Row. They aren't ALL going to be executed, and I am sure that there are a few there now who may even see the outside of the prison walls again, and they deserve the chance to learn and develop their talents as well.
SnakeCharmer 05-30-2007, 08:44 AM they sure do need to pay more with the jobs they DO offer.. i mean i know they can't pay a "reg" pay.. or 10 bucks a hour.. but come on 30 freakin CENTS?
Bookworm1 05-30-2007, 09:52 AM CS Loves JW:
Well girl, we are just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one! I am glad that Culliver treated you with respect, and was helpful! But I still don't like him! LOL Are you SURE you wouldn't rather see me as Warden? Be careful how you answer that one girlie! Big smiles!
If I were warden at Holman, the FIRST thing that I would do, is REFUSE to carry out the executions! Murder is murder, and there is NO excuse for it! The Warden is no exception!

SnakeCharmer 05-30-2007, 10:22 AM I would have over nite visits( trailer visits)
Suthrndreamgirl 05-31-2007, 12:47 AM That would be GREAT...over night visits! Hmmmm. I would settle for being able to walk around...preferably outdoors. Be able to move about a little...share the seasons. Could you just imagine being able to walk hand in hand...in the sunshine...with a nice breeze blowing? OK, snapping back into reality...it's Atmore...HOT as hell! But that's ok too...I'd still love to sit outside (surrounded by razor wire of course) & sweat it out with my baby!
Bookworm1 05-31-2007, 04:10 AM Conjugal visits would sure be nice! :D And inmates who are getting married, should be allowed more time/contact with their spouse and loved ones in attendance, and as long as the couples family and friends supply the food/beverages for the wedding guests, that should be allowed too! No alcohol though, I DO understand that rule. And I don't see why we couldn't have a little music and dancing! Nothing too extravagant, but it IS a special occassion, and should be treated as such!

SnakeCharmer 05-31-2007, 08:15 AM I'd make sure that FRESH fruit and Vegs were served everyday!
Do away with T-Netix and Qwest or what ever the hell it is and let them have cell phones. I'm tired of being ROBBED!
SnakeCharmer 06-04-2007, 02:56 PM Stop maken the men sweat to death.. this is NOT right!! it's only the first of June.. and already they are liven in a oven! 5 minutes after a shower they are soaked with sweat again. there is NO Fresh air in there for nothing.. this heat is already getting up there make nit awfull!
Bookworm1 06-04-2007, 03:24 PM Oh girl, I hear ya! I know that some people view air conditioning as a luxury, but I could NEVER handle that brutal heat! I have heard that some men even pass out or get sick, due to the high temperatures in their cells! Especially the older inmates or those with a pre-existing health problem. It's just cruel!
In the hot summer months, I would make sure that the inmates had something cold to drink, and serve things like watermelon and ice cream for dessert, to help cool them off a bit. If the A/C wasn't a feesible option. It is better than nothing at all. My heart goes out to these poor guys! I feel guilty sometimes, thinking of Steven, while I sit in my air conditioned house. :(

Happy_Girl 06-05-2007, 06:18 AM I would change pretty much everything, But I also think that you should be able to go outside when you visit! and tell hawk face to kiss ma ass
alphagirlwolf 07-26-2007, 09:12 PM my babe is on the row... for his safety, after a fight with another in pop. He says there is an ice machine and they are suppose to get ice twice a day but the warden says no. They have had 4 heat strokes in the last week in the row. give out ice and lots of chilled water.. better yet get AC for the prison. and girls yes the wild cats don't have a chance, but if they go away, then what are they going to do about the rat population.
