Hi all. I was just wondering..... my sweetie is in administrative segregation, and the warden does not allow them to have books. Like me, Steven loves to read! It provides him with a distraction, and is a way from him to escape, if only for a little while. He is always talking about how he would give ANYTHING to be able to read a good book. If I could of course, I would be more than happy to fulfil his request! I think that reading should be encouraged, and that it is a constructive, positive way for prisoners to fill their time. But apparently Culliver doesn't agree! :blah:

ANYWAY, I was just wondering if anyone might have some creative suggestions, as to how to get around this assanine rule? On another similar forum, a woman spoke about her and her pen pal reading the same book at the same time, and the discussing it afterwards. I would LOVE to do something like that with Steven! He is very bright, and he is so starved for mental stimulation. He was not allowed books either, so what she did was photocopy a few chapters at a time for him, and send them in her letters. Could I do something like that? Is there anyone out here who also has a loved one in ad/seg or the "hole" at Holman, who has found some way of getting around this? Thanks so much ladies! :)

get a book online, i found this at yahoo answers

but there are probably more. maybe at amazon you can download too, im not sure.

cut and past to a letter. you can both read and discuss. it takes a little effort and printing on your part, but that might work.

I haven't read a book in years (although I always loved to read) until my sweet man was telling my about a book he was reading "The Winner"...so I had to run out to the library & check it out...read along. I enjoyed it so much. EXCELLENT BOOK! I was going to suggest copying & sending. Just remember...you can only send so many pages at a time (I believe 6)...unless it's a letter. How would they know the difference? But then again...they read all Steven's mail, huh Bookworm? Someone had posted somewhere on PTO about a website where you can pick a novel...like a romance...& they add your names...making the novel personal. Isn't that cool? I've got to find that! Hey, how about this....write a letter...in story form...then let him pick up where you've left off...until you have your own story through letters.

I have never in my life heard of a prison where they have banned reading! Does the ACLU know about this? Honestly, this is totally out of line, even for prisons.

You can't even photo copy a book and send it in to them to read that way. even if you ONLY send in the limited amount of pages allowed. Because it was not sent by the publisher.
it just gets rejected. <shrug> but you could try.
