CHICAGO -- A former guard admitted Tuesday he was a member of a Chicago street gang when he got his job at a maximum security prison and that he used his post to smuggle in drugs.

Robert Goodner, 28, pleaded guilty to charges of defrauding the state and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He was one of three former guards charged in a federal investigation at Stateville prison.

In a plea agreement, Goodner said he was a member of the Gangster Disciples gang when he became a guard at Stateville, and that he ran illegal errands for leaders of other Chicago gangs serving time.

He also admitted smuggling in drugs for members of the Disciples and other gangs. He was paid in cash, drugs and in one case an introduction to a gang leader's female friend.

Included among the other former guards charged in the investigation is a woman accused of having sex with inmates.

Sentencing for Goodner was scheduled for Dec. 16.

I remember hearing about this case....just shows that the prison system does not screen well or care how the CO's affect the inmates.
