Call the prison and ask to speak to reception center records. They should be able to tell you his CDC number (you might need his birthdate), then I would used jpay.com to put money on his books. You have to have his CDC number though to do it. As far as his housing number records can give you that as well. I don't know about DVI but I know at SQ they told me not to put a housing number while they are in reception because the inmates move so much in the begining it actually just delays the mail.

If he has money on his books from the county jail it will follow him to DVI. I think they only get to use the canteen once a month. I know my son was there in reception and he only got to go once in the two months he was there.

Don't forget that post cards will get to him quicker than letters, I send both. I got the post cards they sell at the post office so I have more room to write, also got some plain index cards to use for postcards but I haven't tried those yet. I've been printing a small picture on some of the postcards on the side where the address is, just a small one so there is plenty of room for that long address.

You put money on his books by putting a money order in a letter you send to him with all of his info on the address line. You can also go online and use jpay. It gets there faster. I don't recomend doing either one though until he gets a housing number. DVI usually keeps those guys in reception for a longtime. Which is basically like lockdown until they are processed. Plus they are on lockdown now due to a virus. If you have any other questions please ask.

I haven't heard anything about a lockdown or a virus, can you give us more information?

There is an inmate locator number i am not quite sure what it is and they will give you his cdc # but if you call tracy directly they will be able to give you his housing # and prob his cdc# too. at tracy you just have to send a money order made out to dvi and have his cdc # on it and name and they will put that money on his books but they take out about half for his restitution. the number to dvi is 209-835-4141, you can also talk to his counselor and they will answer any questions you have about him.
