The Process: What Happens When MALE Offenders Go ToPrison?

The information below will explain to you what happens at the beginning of a federal prison sentence for every MALE offender.

Step One
The Courts.
Given a
federal
sentence.

Step Two
Arrival at the Regional
Reception and
Assessment Centre.

Three things happen:
1. Assessment
2. General Orientation
3. Placement Decision
Step Three
Pen Placement.
Males are moved to a
prison that matches the
security level they have
been given.

Step One
The courts hand down a sentence of two years to life.
The inmate is sent back to the provincial pre-trial centre where they will
stay until they are transferred to the Regional Reception and Assessment
Centre.

Step Two
Male inmates begin their federal sentence at the Regional Reception and
Assessment Centre (RRAC). At this time three things happen:

1. Assessment
All new inmates go through an assessment process. The assessment
includes a look at the risk level and needs of the inmate. The goal is to
find out the needs of the inmate and what factors may have led to the
criminal behaviour that they have been sentenced for.
Information about the inmate and the offence is gathered from many
different places including the police, the crown, judges, courts, victims,
family members, and the inmate himself. This is when you may be
contacted by the Correctional Service of Canada and asked to participate
in an Assessment.
They will have a medical exam within 14 days of arriving and will see a
dentist.
When all the information is gathered it is put together and a correctional
plan is developed with the inmate.

2. General Orientation
All inmates have an introduction class that explains the reception and
placement process. They are told that they are expected to be involved in
the assessment process and take an active role in programs and activities.
All federal inmates are given an orientation handbook when they
arrive that explains everything they need to know.
They are given information about things like visiting, phone calls, and
inmate accounts.

3. Placement Decision
This means deciding what level of security the inmate should be
assigned to (i.e. maximum, medium, minimum).
A placement decision is made by a team of people who are involved with
the inmate.
The inmate’s behaviour, attitude, and criminal history are considered in a
placement decision.

Step Three
Once the above process is complete the inmate is sent to an institution
that matches the security level/classification he is given.
This is called Pen Placement.
Once inmates are pen placed they are given an orientation specific to that
institution.
The inmate’s Correctional Plan is completed at the institution they are
placed in.
When an inmate is pen placed that institution is usually called their
mother or parent institution.

Does anyone know how long it takes between being sentanced and transfered to the Assessment facility? My guy was just given Federal time and I am wondering how quickly he'll be transfered, or more to the point, where he'll be for Christmas.

Thanks, I am new to this (all of it)
