hi everyone,

i am a bit new here but am finding it to be very comfortable and informative. my husband just got sentenced by the nice judge to 63 months. i am aware of the 85% deal but just recently heard that there is legislation in process to reduce a sentence to 50%. i also heard something about 33% but i could only pray for that to be true. we have 2 young children and 2 older step kids. (his by a previous). any information or direction as to where to find out more would be appreciated. thank to all here at the pto, what a great source of information and friendship.

take care,
julie

Don't hold your breath for it. I have heard nothing on any laws/legislation pending, or that have been introduced to reduce, or alter, federal good conduct time. (And I am in a position that I would know). What that means then is that what you have heard is nothing more than a bad rumor.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, as I have said this before. The people that are in the position to make these types of decisions, are not going to do it. (This includes both the democrates and the republicans). Yes, you have a handfull who are willing to discuss it, but for the most part, they are against it because they are afraid that they will be labeled as 'soft on crime'. No politician wants this label. We also have to remember that John Ashcroft is in charge of the Justice Department and he is far from 'soft on crime'. If anything he is pushing things the other way. He is the one that has forced the BOP to take a more strict approach to halfway house placement. He is the one that had created a panel to review all sentence reduction, and all sentences that have been imposed that fall below the guidelines, to have those sentences appealed if he felt the judge acted improperly. Ahscroft is tough.

No, there is nothing in the works to have GCT reduced, and I would not expect anything to happen anytime soon.

Sorry

well i won't shoot the messenger! lol :) but i would be less than honest if i said i wasn't a bit disappointed. i have been on this rollercoaster for 4 years now. i am growing weary but know the journey has only just begun. i have to be strong for my children. i am lucky as i have an incredible support system not only with my entire family but the the community. we have a long road ahead of us but i am definitely up for the fight. though our legal system is said to be one of the fairest in the land, i beg to differ. infact it is pretty screwed up if you ask me. but i am sure many of you out there will agree with me. well i will quit complaining as there are not enough available characters in the message length to say what i need about this but i will continue to read and support those that i can. thanks Gyg for the info and the honesty.

GCT is short of Good Conduct Time.

THERE IS A NEW PROPOSED BILL THAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN BY THE ORGANIZATION "FEDCURE". I DON'T KNOW THAT MUCH ABOUT THE PROCESS OF THIS BEING TURNED INTO AN ACTUAL BILL, BUT I WAS ASKED TO SEND COPIES OF IT TO REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS, TV AND RADIO STATIONS, AND ALL FEDERAL PRISONERS I KNOW. IT IS CALLED "LERA" - THE LITERACY, EDUCATION, AND REHABILITATION ACT OF 2003. I'M SURE YOU CAN GET TO IT ON THE FEDCURE WEBSITE. IF I KNOW HOW TO POST ATTACHMENTS I WOULD POST IT HERE. IT PROPOSES 180 DAYS OF GOOD TIME/YEAR FOR FEDERAL PRISONERS WHO MEET CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS. IT SOUNDS EXCELLENT TO ME!!

liza ... i would be quite interested in hearing more about this when you do have the chance to add the attachments, but once again i am not one to hold my breath for anything good to happen when the goverment and prison facilities are involved. thanks for the input :)
