I got a litte (actually a lot) concerned about a close friend of mine in VSPW. She usually calls, but I hadn't heard from her in over a week. My mind got the better of me and I began to worry. I hear horror stories all the time about prisons.
I called VSPW and got ahold of the medical unit. My friend is accident prone, has a tendency to fight, and is being treated for some ailments. My fear was that something happened that might have landed her in the hospital.
The lady I spoke to told me that she didn't have any information available, and that anything confidential coudn't be released, but she did promise to follow up, get whatever information that was releaseable, and have someone call me back. She asked me for my friend's name/cdc number as well as my name and phone number, and assured me that someone would call me today.
I wasn't exactly holding my breath at that point. But sure enough, a lady from VSPW did call me back and told me that my friend was fine and that there was no need to worry. She told me that she understood how difficult it is for those of us on the outside with friends and loved ones in the prison system.
I know that many of you have been in my shoes and worry about your loved ones in prison. All too often we hear about the negative -- how badly we are treated when we call in search of any information regarding the well being of friends and family in prison. I thought it would be good to mention the positive as well.
I'll tell you, that call meant a lot to me, and I told the lady so.
