I apologize if this is posted in the wrong area, but I wasn't quite sure where it should be. It's such a big help for somebody just coming home, or for anybody looking to get more for their money, so I just have to share it. And I know from experience how hard it can be paying for phone calls & sending a little something for canteen, not to mention gas, food & everything else it takes for visitation.

It's a program called Angel Food Ministries and anybody can use it. You don't have to qualify, fill out any forms or applications or answer any questions; you just place an order! The food is fresh or frozen, it's NOT second hand, damaged, day old, out of date, bent, or without labels. They have a different package of items every month for $25 and specialty packages with chicken, pork & steaks for $18.

They have a list of all the items in the different packages for that month and there's no limit to how many packages you can buy, but the orders do have to be prepaid. They accept cash, money orders & food stamps. The distribution sites for each state are listed & believe me, it's definately worth checking out!

Wow...I didn't know this existed, and I have one in my town!

Isn't it ironic? Dan was sentenced for supposedly embezzling massive amounts of money, yet we've been so broke for so long, I need to JUMP on something like this! In any case, thank you very much for posting this... it will be a very big help! :)

If you have an area food shelf, ask them about programs of this sort. To my knowledge, some are still offering government commodities. Basically, you do a few hours of volunteer work and you get two bags of staple groceries--cheese, butter, flour, sugar, sometimes meat, and a certain amount of "miscellaneous".

With the holidays not too far away, please check also with your local Salvation Army. Many give out "holiday baskets" prior to Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Again, this will be two bags of groceries, always including a turkey or a ham. Not sure if all chapters do it, but around here they even take Christmas lists from folks who have kids, and they do a mighty fine job of coming up with an assortment of toys.

And remember to patronize their thrift stores. That's where the money goes, and what you spend in your community stays in your community.

Around here the Goodwill Stores have been having 1 Saturday a month (usually the 3rd one but they always post in advance) where everything is 50% off. They sometimes have brand new items. Some of the thrift type stores may do something like this in other areas. They usually have 50% off on certain color tags to clear out old items.

One suggestion for the grocery store which many people overlook: if the product you are looking for is at eye-level, look above and below it and the chances are you'll find another brand or similar item at a significantly lower price. Yes, there are some brand names people prefer (particular flavors or what have you), but in many cases, you can get the same item as a store brand at perhaps half of what a brand name item costs. Does it really make a different what the brand name is on a box of oatmeal or corn flakes? Almost certainly not.

Goodwill stores around here have one color tag that is 50% off each week--I think it rotates in roughly 6-week intervals. Salvation Army stores often do the same thing, but it varies from store to store.

WOW that is great news for alot of people! Thank you! I'm not surprised, we don't have it in my state :( No wonder we often take the infamous title of 'The Hungriest State'. That's people and a large percentage of kids here go hungry with NO MEALS every day. But I will tell my brother he is in California, working 4 jobs, has 2 kids to feed, and he just lost his food stamps due to a 'technicality'. He had to estimate his income because one of his jobs is sub-teaching, he never kknows when he will work. He OVERESTIMATED and they told him it's false information and he's lucky that he doesn't go to prison over it!!! So he could really use this!!! Thanks!!!

The Goodwill store in our area also has a once a month everything in the store (except new things) 50% off. It's usually the 3rd Saturday of the month.

Something else to watch for is church rummage sales. We have one that will run one in the spring and in the fall. On the 1st day of the sale they will sell thinkgs at "yard sale" prices. On the 2nd or last day they will sell it as everything you can get in a grocery bag for 1 price. I haven't checked out all rummage sales but usually the ladies in the church use these for their charity projects and want to get as much money as possible while unloading the goods. I've gotten some really good stuff cheap.
