I am new to dealing with the Federal System and was glad to see there was a place for Terre Haute on here. I have been writing to someone there for a few months and we have exchanged several calls and I was not sure how the federal System compared to Indiana State Prison. I hope that I can eventually go down and see him but I don't know if that will ever happen.

Sorry no one welcomed you down here in the Terre Haute area...but I do want to extend a welcome!
I'm not familiar with how IN state prisons are..so I have nothing to compare the two with. If there are any questions you can think of specific to TH USP, I'll be glad to try and help.

Speaking of visiting, can anyone tell me why you have to have known the inmate before they were sent to gaol??? And how long to get visiting approval??
Cheers

All, I know is that he would have to send you visitor forms and then you fill out and they check you out and either approve or not and put your name on a list to visit. I don,t know anythin about having to know him before Maybe? all you can do is try. Welcome to federal forum, ask general questions in the top on page under general prison talk and you get more exposure than just here!

It only took about 2 weeks if that long to get approved. I just found out today that I can go visit now.
All I have to do is find someone that will tell me how to get there and where to park and all that crap. I also want some general info on how they run the visits.

Visits are generally kind of casual but watch what you wear. No sandals or toeless shoes. No halters and no shorts! You will need to bring in change or small bills for the vending machines and it is best to do so in a see-through bag. Go easy because the cos are tempermental. Look at mapquest for the camp and you will get everything you need to know. Don't take a purse in or anything but the see-through bag.
I just did three years at the camp. Good Luck!

I spent 3 years in the camp and got out last fall. Post a list of questions and tell me who's going in. The camp is a piece of cake but there are some inconveniences. If you want, sent me a private message.

I am also new to Prisontalk and found it by accident. My brother is serving 72 months at USP Terre Haute IN. This is very difficult because we are in Memphis, TN. We were stunned when they transfered him there, due to the fact that he is a paraplegic. Anyway I need information on the following two things.
First the most critical: our mother has terminal cancer and is under hospice care, she only has maybe a few more weeks on this earth. Can anyone tell me how we can get a furlough for him to come and visit? I have called the number on the BOP website and can't get anyone to return my calls. My mother's hospice social worker and nurse both have also tried to contact the prison with no avail.
Secondly, he was told last year that he was eligible for a transfer closer to home, but as of today nothing. What can we do to speed up this process?

The USP is diferent than the camp. You need to call the USP and ask for his counselor or the Chaplain. Furloughs are tough to get last I heard. Transfers are usually only possible after an inmate has been in a facility for more than a year. Be persistent! That's the only way to deal with these people. Good Luck.
