JACKSON, Miss. -- A year into his job as Mississippi's prisons chief, Chris Epps is facing close to a $70 million deficit.

Still, Epps said the state Department of Corrections is on track to becoming financially sound.

Epps said he based his projection on cost-cutting measures instituted since he became MDOC commissioner in August 2002.

Possibly the biggest accomplishment during Epps' tenure has been gaining American Corrections Association accreditation for every facility in the state prison system. It's the first time all the state's prisons have been accredited. Before this year, none of the facilities had ACA approval.

Gov. Ronnie Musgrove said Epps has done an exemplary job.
