OK---been working on this for 4 hours!
You are biking to the library. When you are 75% of the way there you realize you forgot a book. So you turn around and head back. You are 1/3 of the way back you realize you didnt need the book. So you turn around again and bike 3.2 miles to the library.
How far do you live from the library?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~OMG--someone please help us solve this problem:angry:
Looks like 6.4 miles to me.
Convert the 75% to 3/4.
So if you travel 3/4 of the way there, and turn back around for 1/3 of the distance that would be 1/4 (one third of three fourths). That leaves you half way between home and library, so the trip is 3.2 miles for half - 6.4 for the whole trip.
You are the second one to come up with that answer. I have gotten two answers my self and two others have gotten 2 different answers.
I am going with 6.4.
Thank you---if anyone else wants to try it feel free and let me know what you get.
THANKS------Now "Calgon please take me away!"
There could be another answer if you interpret the wording differently. If you head back home and cover 1/3 of the TOTAL distance between home and library.
Yeah, one person who I asked said it could be read several ways. Why give a 7th grader home work that take 4 hours to do one, and another teacher with a masters in education cant figure out. I had to ask all over the world, literally, to get the answer.
I hate when send home work like that. I know one time I went to other teacher at the same school and she did not know how to figure it out. We had to have my daughters teacher show us how to do it. I hope that it works out.
if you can buy one of those flypens. As you write the question it helps you solve the answer.
