View Full Version : Are prisoners able to attend major events like weddings?
Joe Bui 02-14-2007, 01:32 AM Please forgive me for being vague, I don’t want to give too much away and I’m just looking for some information which I haven’t been able to find. A friend of a friend of mines may be going to prison soon. This person has a close family member who will be getting married this year. The person who is getting married has asked me to find out whether there is any way for the person who is going to prison to go to the wedding. We have heard rumours that it is possible but we’re not sure; is there any way for a person who is serving time to get out of prison for a single day to go to an event like a wedding. Please let me know whether this question depends on the type of crime that was committed.
Again, I’m very sorry for being vague. Thanks to anyone who responds.
ytakemyguy 02-14-2007, 01:34 AM No, they cannot attends weddings. Sorry, but they are not on vacation. In California I know they cannot attend, sometimes they can barely attend their own. The only thing they can attend is funerals here and the family has to pay for the cost of the cops. Please forgive me for being vague, I don’t want to give too much away and I’m just looking for some information which I haven’t been able to find. robbreid 02-14-2007, 11:52 AM When you say Prison, I'll assume you mean they are expecting a sentence of 24 months or more?
Anything less is provincial jail, and a whole different type of 'time'.
As for prison, it will depend on the length of sentence and the prison you are sent to. If it is a short sentence, four years or less, factor in 3 months in reception, and 1 month in camp before you can have a pass.
It is the National Parole Board's priority to maintain family ties, and promote anything positive to do with assisting the inmate, and his family.
With that said, a wedding isn't exactly a family emergency, and very unlikely to be given approval. However a first time, non-violent offender, under four year sentence, in camp, can apply for a pass to visit a halfway house for a weekend, along with a day pass from that house to attend the wedding.
The opposite option, and if this wedding is that important would be to delay sentencing. Just talk to your lawyer how to do this.
With that said, a Wedding isn't exactly a family emergency.
meganlea 02-14-2007, 11:54 AM Weddings are definitely a no-go. Funerals are even hard to get approval for. Usually you're only allowed out for funerals of immediate family members - parents, children, siblings, spouses

this is correct, while yes you can try and apply for him to get the pass, there is a 50/50 chance of it being granted. Also as this member said it depends on their sentence.
Here in the US our inmates arent allowed to leave prison no matter how short their sentence is . And they rarely get to go to their loved ones funeral.
