Malaysia will build 16 new prisons nationwide to end overcrowding at existing facilities.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Fu Ah Kiow said six prisons were under construction in northern and eastern Malaysian towns and seven others were in the design process. Details about three more facilities were not immediately given.

He said existing prisons around the country were designed for a maximum of 31,000 people but were currently holding 39,000 prisoners. The new prisons will be able to accommodate 15,000 inmates, he said.

The new buildings will include workshops, training centers and sports facilities for inmates, and housing for prison workers.
