Prison is not like oz, there are some similiarities but you have to remember OZ is just that a television show. And they tend to make things more extreme as they do in all prison movies .

chris ~ i don't think it's a naive question. if you haven't been inside prison walls you don't know how it is. the 1st x i went to visit my husband i thought he'd be brought out in shackles. in my mind i was thinking of shawshank redemption, green mile, etc. lol. i didn't know what 2 think. e_wife is right in my opinion. prison movies tend to all revert back to alcatraz and make things so much more extreme than real life. don't be worried girl, he'll be alright.

My husband IS brought out in shackles. For what reason, I have no idea. But he says that OZ is bullshit.

Never seen it, don't want too. But I can assure you it is BS. I remember seeing some movie about a women's prison years ago. Not anything like what I lived through.

My dad and my boyfriend both served time in Ohio pens. From what both have said it's not the drama, glam, or overexaggeration of my favorite show prison break or oz. However, Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies and I would not miss an episode of prison break for anything. :haha:

Is anything on TV real???? Calm down. Do you think some of the hospital dramas are really like it is in a hospital???? The same for prison shows. TV is entertainment and only bares a slight resemblence to "real" life, even the so called reality shows are editied and put in a story order to be followed.

You mean you didn't walk around in your skimpy underwear looking at the male guards with longing? Oh wait, that was another type of movie. LOL!

Now that I know how things work, I take perverse pride in pointing out what is wrong with the TV shows.

For more real tv, check out the Lockdown series on the National Geographic Channel. It is shot in real prisons, interviewing real prisoners and prison staff. Bound to be some bs because of the cameras but it's as real as you're going to see.

TV and movies are BS and this is half the reason why people get misconceptions about prison...OZ is bull...anothe way to "glamorize" prison

Oz, the HBO TV show, wasn't created as a realistic portrayal of life in prison but as a fictional, futuristic exaggeration of crime and punishment adult entertainment tv show which, because of being shown by HBO, is able to be quite explicit in its inclusion of sex, violence and 'adult themes' and exploit these to extremes.

The premise of the show is that Emerald City is an experimental prison created to house the most violent and brutal criminals and provide an opportunity for radical, experimental treatments, punishments and regimes to be trialled. Ostensibly the sex, violence and abuse is to demonstrate how cruel and lawless is Oz but in reality it serves to include, as much ratings and viewer grabbing, gratuitous soft porn as can fit into each episode.

To compare this show with an actual prison is like comparing Homer Simpson's workplace with a current working nuclear power plant. Or comparing the sex depicted in hardcore porn with what goes on in most peoples sexual relationships. Yes, the basic supposition is the same, but not much else and even the basics are grossly distorted to support the story. Though, with what we are seeing from Guantanamo Bay maybe the show is no longer so futuristic.

Oz, I believe, is deliberately graphic, provocative, titillating and though perhaps, at a stretch, could be interpreted as a prediction or something of a warning, the show was never intended to be realistic or representative of current incarceration practices. So, please, watch and enjoy it (or not) as the fiction that it is and don't unnecessarily add to the worries you are already dealing with.

The fictional TV shows are completely sensationalized. And even the reality shows like Lockdown and others focus more on violence, drugs, rape, etc. in order to keep people's attention. As far as I have been able to tell it's the abject loneliness and isolation that is the worst part of prison.
