House tackles burn center, youth life sentences
(Excerpt) The bill would prohibit judges from sentencing a person younger than 17 to life without parole. The measure passed in a 97-18 vote with no discussion.
The measure was prompted by the case of Tyler Edmonds, who was 13 when he was convicted in 2004 in Oktibbeha County of murdering his half sister's husband and was sentenced to life. The Mississippi Supreme Court overturned his conviction and ordered a new trial earlier this month.
