Prisoners at Rivers C.I. Request Donations

From: Walter B. Godbey 45377-083, Unit A-2/215, P.O. Box 630, Winton, N.C. 27986-0630
The Native Circle is looking for donations to help them get started. They are a group of 15 prisoners, and they require a couple of feathers and some bandanas (which need to be toned down in terms of color/design, though a Lakota bandana was recently approved). The group is also looking for paperback books, particularly on culture.

Donations should be earmarked for the Native American spiritual group and sent directly to: James K. Brown, Chaplain, P.O. Box 840, Winton, N.C. 27986. Please notify Mr. Godbey if you send any items into the prison.

The Circle greatly appreciates any donations you can make.

Where do I obtain bandanas? and the feathers? craft store feathers? Lakota culture? Do these items have to be sent through the manufacturer or can I send books, religious items in a box?
Thanks Dee
I would be happy to help, just need the do's and don'ts

Well, what I'd suggest is that you contact the chaplain at the prison and find out about the way to get those items to the right person. You might want to send them to the Elder who volunteers there, if there is one, and the chaplain's office would know how to get you in touch with them. There are places online where you can get feathers. Try the Wandering Bull----I think the url is http://www.wanderingbull.com but I'm not sure. Or try Crazy Crow Trading Post online. Native Essence, too, sells items. The bandanas, I'm not sure about those.

That thing about the bandanas caught me off guard because so many prisons forbid bandanas because of the gang thing. I'm not sure what they'd be used for in Native American ceremonies. I do know that probably blue and red would be forbidden because those are well-known gang colors but you could ask the chaplain about that, too, in a letter or phone call.

the prison is in Winton N.C. but I can't seem to find the name of the prison. I thought I would just phone and ask, how to go about this, so much faster. I was able to download through acrobat reader, N.C. polocies on religion, and it gave quite a bit of info on what is allowed, feathers, pipes, such measurements of things. Bandanas must be plain. But no phone, and no info if I can just send it.So if anyone knows what prison is in Winton N.C. please post it here. Thanks
