: Help Needed at FCI Coleman (Low) - Florida
Urgent Action: Forwarded by: New Dawn Deer, newdawndeer@yahoo.com on behalf of Frank Whitaker #17662-018, FCI Coleman (Low), 846 N.E. 54th Terrace, Coleman, FL 33521-1021
NAPS has received word from the Warden that the Religious Services Dept. has ordered a special covering for the sweat lodge (one that meets safety standards and will be used solely for sweatlodge ceremonies). The cover will be in place once it is received from the manufacturer.
14 August 2003 - The prisoners are in receipt of 80 new blankets for the sweatlodge.
I am writing on behalf of Frank Whitaker, #17662-018 housed at FCI Coleman in Florida. I recently received a phone call letting me know that all blankets were ordered to be taken from the sweat lodge, as the Warden needed them elsewhere in the institution. From what I was told, these blankets were taken into the kitchen, cut up into pieces, and used to wipe off tables. Others were given to inmates to cover up with.
It has been said that Chaplain Becton was given money to get new blankets and towels that are needed and nothing has been done. The Native American community at Coleman needs help from the outside, as things there continue to get worse.
I received this phone call from Mr. Whitaker several days ago, and since then he has tried to call me several times, but all calls are cut off so we cannot talk.

From NAPS: Please note that this is a federal unit and each unit submits an annual budget for the chaplaincy department, which includes money needed for all faith groups, including Native Americans. Under BOP regulations, these prisoners are entitled to a sweat lodge and these issues should be raised. We would suggest contacting the following:
The Warden or Chaplain Becton, FCI Coleman, 846 N.E. 54th Terrace, Coleman, FL 33521-1021, Phone: 352-689-4000, Fax: 352-330-0259
Southeast Regional Office, 3800 Camp Creek Parkway, S.W., Building 2000, Atlanta, GA 30331-6226, Phone: 678-686-1200, Fax: 678-686-1229

Please copy the prisoner on correspondence or let him know of any phone calls, so the Circle will have these documents for their files.
