I'm thinking about going back to school in the next year, and what I really want to work in is reentry. Right now I'm looking into a social work degree. Does that seem sensible, or are there other degrees that would make more sense?

Social work is probably more applicable. My BS is in social work and my masters degree work is in criminal justice. I work in the criminal justice system and in the "big picture," I feel my SW degree is more useful. Good luck! :)
