Not actually the money...they put a cash value on the items they buy with canteen. I hope your loved one isn't doing that too much. Not only could he get in trouble with the gaurds but he could find himself in danger if he gets in over his head.

Thanks Amy, he just mentioned something about gambling and at the time I didnt' think much about it, glad to know it's not something they are allowed to do. The way you put it, I don't think it's something he would get into, hope not anyway;)

I'm not quite sure what others gamble on..but I think that my man and his friends gamble on basketball and football games...but just amongst each other..not with anyone else...he only hangs around a selected few in there...but I told him that he needs to stop that because I don't want to be sending him money for nonsense

They play a lot of cards - poker, etc - with canteen items having different values.

Please note - that playing cards, poker etc. is considered gambling, and if caught by guards they can be sent to the hole at unit 32 for 6 months or more and loose all privledges.

This includes betting un who will win the games, horse racing, cars, sports, etc.

So if your loved one is doing it, be careful not to mention it in letters or phone calls.

Let's add not mentioning it ON the INTERNET to that. ;)
