Can anyone give me some information on Lexington - Camp for women. I have to report any day now and I'm nervous and trying to find some up to date information before I leave.

Will I be in a dormitory style setting?
How soon can I go to the commissary from the time I arrive
Is the commissary list very large?
Does the $290 count just for the commissary or also vending machines and washers - can you wash your own clothes?
What kind of work does the kitchen consist of? Just everything that has to do with kitchen work? Sorry I'm a first timer and my questions are probably ignorant but I don't know what to expect
How long before phone calls
Do I just walk up and self surrender to the guard and then what happens to me
When they do the strip search do they go through your hair and make you open your mouth and all that? (another dumb question)
Is there a library there?I'm scared and no one seems to have alot of info on this.

My reporting date was extended - will I get another letter giving me the exact date? Is there a chance they will change my destination?

If anyone could respond I would appreciate it so much - please!

Hi there. I will soon be joining you. My sentencing is this Wed. Lexington is the closest camp from me (In Mississippi). How long will u have to serve? I'm looking at 15-21 mo. I met another lady on this website. She surrendered on Nov 1st. I have been keeping contact with her very regularing. I may be able to answer some of your questions.

Will I be in a dormitory style setting? When she first arrived she was in a room with a lot of people. Like 50 people. After about 6 weeks she got moved to her regular room which only has 13 people in it! To me that sucks I wished it was like 2 per room.
How soon can I go to the commissary from the time I arrive. She went the next day.
Is the commissary list very large? Yes
Does the $290 count just for the commissary or also vending machines and washers - can you wash your own clothes? I dont know this one
What kind of work does the kitchen consist of? Just everything that has to do with kitchen work? Sorry I'm a first timer and my questions are probably ignorant but I don't know what to expect. Dont know this one either. I do know she work s the kitchen and has some pretty weird hours. Like from 12-1230; 230-330 and 5-630.
How long before phone calls...about a week
Do I just walk up and self surrender to the guard and then what happens to me....you tell the guard that u are there to surrender and he will send you over to the big prison for checking in.
When they do the strip search do they go through your hair and make you open your mouth and all that? (another dumb question)..i'm pretty sure they do
Is there a library there? yes and she says it pretty good

Hi - Crystal
I will be there for 10 months. I'm not sure when I will go exactly. I was suppose to surrender on Dec. 7th but I got a short stay for some time after the 5th of February. It doesn't seem like very many people go to Lexington - women anyway. This is my first time and definately my last time! I thought I would go to Alderson actually - there is just a 30 minute difference so I guess it doesn't matter...Are you scared? Somedays I feel scared - somedays I just want it over with. How do you know you'll get 21 months and not the lower end. I'm not being noisy - just curious - you said you were a first time offender. I feel so ignorant half the time and still kinda "weird" about the whole prison thing. Well, I'll let you go..thanks for taking the time to respond - I haven't had much luck with anyone passing on info. on Lexington. Well, one guy did and he has been so helpful but again he can only give me advice from a mans prospective but he's been wonderful - thanks again..and maybe we'll see each other ...Good luck at your sentencing and stay strong and postive...

hey there,
i did 13 months in the camp in lexington. its not that bad at all. the only bad thing is missing your family, other than that its like a big college dorm. about the search, they will search your hair and mouth and EVERYWHERE else, on your initial search. the kitchen work is like coking, cleaning, dishes, etc. not to bad! let me know if i can tell you anything else. i am sorry you have to go, but believe me, if you have to go, this is not bad.

Thank you sooo much for replying - I haven't much luck with anyone replying. I have a few more questions if you have time.

Is there air conditioning there in the summer?
If you choose to skip a meal can you just stay on your bed?
Are you free to move around at the camp or is all your movements controlled?
I heard some talk about 2 to a room - is that true?
Do you or do you know of anyone who has a commissry list?
Do they have a beauty shop or room there to get hair cuts, etc?
What about make up - is it allowed and can you pruchase it at the commissary.
Will I have alot of free time?
Would you have perferred to be at a larger faciltiy rather than a smaller one - and if so why or why not?
What about physical exercise? Gym or anything?
For the most part when you first arrived - did you know anyone at all there? And, how were you treated upon your arrival by both CO's and inmates?Thank you so much and I'm sorry for being so windy - just trying to prepare myself...thanks again

Do you know yet what date you will be surrending - my atty said he knew I would be going to Alderson - only to find out Lexington - I don't care either way. Lesser of two evils I guess thats how I look at it, Thsi site has been so helpful; but I'm still feeling uncertain at times..I guess if you go to Lex - I'll see you - sounds pretty small - take care and good luck:)

No I havent got my letter yet, and from what I have heard on here it is hard to say for sure where I will get sent but if not Lexington I hope alderson. Good Luck and take care of yourself. Do you know if we are allowed to smoke in these places? My name is Joy... maybe I will see you there.

No smoking in the federal prison system.
Since you haven't received your letter yet, this might be a good time to try to quit smoking. You might think about calling your local american cancer society for a smoking cessation program.

Hi, Joy
I smoke to and I did see where you can't smoke anymore..(EEEK!!) I guess we'll get healthy while we are there, huh? I had my date postponed - so I'm not sure when I'll get my new letter - sometime after the 5th of Feb. is when I am suppose to report. Let me know when you get your destination. Talk with you soon.

Yes I will let you know when I get my letter. As of today, no news yet. I don't know whether to hope the letter is in the mail each day or not. I am kind of in limbo. I kind of would like to go and get it over with but also want to spend some time with my family first. I got fired from my job because after sentencing my stuff was in the local paper and my job found out and terminated me. I don't know if I should go look for a job seeing as I won't be here long. Its really frustrating. Well good luck and hope to see ya around.:D

I will be reporting on Feb 6th, still don't know where. My lawyers say it is up to BOP to decide where, they tell me that it will be a camp, but they can't tell me which one. I would love to know how the rest of you know where you are going but you still aren't even sure which day to report yet. Because of this site I have found alot of information that is very useful, and that has made my children relax alittle about their mother going to jail. I would like to thank everyone for their input on all of the topics that are discussed here at PTO.

Hi,
I was told I would end going to Alderson by my atty. I think he just figured that is where most women go - but when I recieved my letter I was actually assigned to Lexington, KY.From what I know and have read - the BOP has some type of formula they use to assign you and even though they try to assign you close to your home - they can send you anywhere they choose. Plus, BOP considers 500 miles as close to your home. I guess my question is - how do you know you have to report on Feb 6 if you haven't recieved your letter yet? Is that just an approx. date? When the judge granted me a stay on reporting - all he granted was any time AFTER Feb 5th - so I am in a state of limbo?? Good luck and stay postive. Britt

my sentance started out in lex, then alderson wv, then on to bryan tx. lex was the worst of the 3. the other camps has 100% more to do than lex does. lex is very small, i dont know maybe they dont get the funding that bigger places do. the worst thing about lex is it is dirty!!!

I heard some talk about 2 to a room - is that true? yes there are some 2 man rooms but you will start out in a 13-15 man room and have to work your self up to a smaller room. they have 4 man rooms, there is several different sizes
Do you or do you know of anyone who has a commissry list? not too bad but could be better
Do they have a beauty shop or room there to get hair cuts, etc?yes, but i went in with hair down my back and went in for a trim and it went almost to my chin. they dont have to have training to be put to work there
What about make up - is it allowed and can you pruchase it at the commissary. purchased at commissary
Will I have alot of free time? yes
Would you have perferred to be at a larger faciltiy rather than a smaller one - and if so why or why not? larger one, there is so much more to do
What about physical exercise? Gym or anything? if you want to call it that. it is very small but serves itd purpose

hello,
im sorry for not geting back sooner... there is no air conditioning in the summer, it does get hot, but my advice is to stay in at least a 6 or higher count room, these rooms get big fans- 4 women and below do not get the big fans, you can buy the fans that go on your bed but the big ones really cool off the room. there is no smoking that is hard i know, they stopped it while i was there, ciggarettes are contraband and were selling for about 75 dollars a pack, but it is not worth getting caught over, you will lose good time and go to the county jail. try to quit before you get there, because they dont allow chewing gum either. i promise i know you are scared, but it is not bad... you can skip meals anytime you want to, i rarely ate in the mess hall, i ate from the commissary..you'll see why :) lease feel free to call me if you can ill be home tonight (thursday) night after about 7pm, call me collect, my number is 843 770 0652 ill do anything i can to help you.

Hi, I am surrendering March 26, FMC Lexington Womens Prison Camp. I was wondering if you knew if I will be able to wear contact lens or should I buy a pair of glasses. I am a knitter, do you know if it is allowed. One more question, (sorry, I am new at this) is FMC a medical facility for women as well as men? Do they offer the RDAP program for women?

asours
02-13-2007, 02:58 PM
lexington isnt a medical facility for women and they dont offer rdap. most gets transfered to alderson west virginia for rdap. you can knit, you will have to place a special order to get your supplies. usually takes 3-4 weeks to receive supplies. i know other prisons let you have contact lenses but i dont remember if lex does or not. take them and try all they can do is tell you no. take your glasses also just in case. good luck
