You may want to check our education forum here on PTO. Also all ex-convicts are eligible for the Pell Grant - or fafsa. However if you were convicted of a drug offense you are not eligible.

I received grants like Jonathan said when I forst got out. Any drug offenders are not eligible. After I started making too much money, I was not eligible, but I would also suggest looking at the school you go to. There are grants and scholarships for people who apply. I received a $5,000 last semester from one of George Mason's scholraships awards...many of these awards are not claimed or applied for...believe me, I have received a ton of money, and it has worked out okay.

In 1994, they took away access to Pell grants for people who are in prison, you have to wait until you get out to get one of those.
