Hi im new to this and had some questions. I have a family member who just went in this week on 12/4/06 and was wondering when do they allow her to make a call. Also do u know when visitations will be allowed to go see her. Not sure how long that usually takes. thanks for your time.

I am not sure how long it is until they can call. I will ask the few people that I know in Prison. I do know that they are in like "solitary" (that is not the correct word). for I think at least week. It may very that is where they "acclimate" to the new surroundings. I know that is what happens when they get moved. I would call the prison and ask or go to their web-site. They have very useful information about visitations do's and don't and so forth.
Peace,

It generally takes a week to two to get their phone list approved by the counselor although often the counselor will allow an inmate to make one phone call just to let family members know she is okay. (She is). What the previous post said about being in solitary is not accurate. Generally, a new inmate at FPC Bryan is in her new living quarters within a couple of hours of arrival. Her room mates will help her get acclimated and she will go to dinner with the ladies in her unit around 5 p.m.
She will send you visitor forms which must be completed and sent to her counselor, not to her. Once approved, the inmate will let you know that you can come visit. This, also takes a couple of weeks.

That is correct...I arrived in Bryan at about 9 am and was in my unit and in my room by 12:30.....I brought cash with me and was able to go to commissary that same day...it took about 2 weeks for my phone to be turned on but I was allowed to make one phone call in my counselors office. ...The phone list gets turned in and normally they are turned on pretty quickly...it just depends on how quickly the counselor gets the phone list to the office that sets up the accounts...I just happened to have a really slow counselor....
Her roommates will help her along...as well as others there too....

thanks for your replies. If she went in this monday does anyone know about how long it takes before we can go visit her? How long that process usually takes?

There again it just depends on how fast the unit counselor is.....because they do a background check on everyone on the list...immediate family or not. My list got approved pretty quickly because I went in and talked to my counselor after about a week and asked her how long it would take and she did it and I had it back within a couple days.
When she fills out her visitors list she should give it to her counselor or slide it under her door if she is out of the office and she will know when it is approved because she will get a print out of all her approved visitors in mail call....if there is a problem with one of the visitors the counselor will call her in to the office.

a newly arrived inmate is rarely comfortable enough to be pushy with unit staff--even the counselor--but the counselor can often see their way clear to allowing a call home just so she can let her family know everything is ok--it is my experience that in these situations you catch a lot more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, which is the approach I have used whenever I spoke with a counselor--getting right down to a first name basis and establishing a bit of a rapport--it is always nice to be able to provide an assist to someone in need
