Appeals from a trial verdict are automatic (direct) appeal of errors in the trial. If there was a plea, there is no direct appeal.

Beyond direct appeal there are other post conviction motions that can be made to point out errors that did not take place in the trial. These are filed to the trial court, the state courts and federal courts (one after the other if the ruling on a motion is then appealed.)
