My search goes back to 1929-1932 us disciplinary barracks alcartraz island CA. My father was sent there from march field CA for taking a banjo, he was about 17 years old, I found this out by getting lucky and finding a few documents through NARA. I need help locating any prision records that might be available as I don't know where to start and all I know is, he was assigned to the 54th army air corp school, the banjo belonged to a PFC Edward Riely. My dad had a court martial trial and he got 5 years, reduced to 3. I was hoping to find out more info on his time spent there. I'd appreciate any help and advise.

Wow, this is definitely a needle in a haystack situation. My best guesstimate would be to contact the general information number at the USDB and ask where the records from those years are archived, then contact that facility. Even though the records are "probably" public records, you will most likely need to make your request under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act). Look on the web for the proper procedures and forms to use to request the information. I'm not positive this is the right course of action, but maybe it will lead you somewhere else helpful. Good Luck!
