My fiance' was just sent to Calhoun State Prison. Can anyone tell me anything about that facility? How the guards are, visitation, etc? Any info someone can give me would be great right now. They are not allowing him to use the phone but once a month b/c they have him in the hole b/c there are no beds/cells available for him right now. We have been waiting for himn to be shipped so we could get on with the visitation papers and now this. I'm guessing while they have him in the whole that he won't be able to get visits...anyone who can help me....thanks

As long as he is not in the hole for disiplanary(SP?) reasons he should be able to visit. I just don't understand why they shipped him there if they don't have room for him.
He can go ahead and send you the SO form so you can get that process taken care of. I am not sure how Calhoun works but you will need to stay in contact with his counselor to get the paperwork done in a timely fashion. These people tend to drag their feet. That has been my experience.

Thank you for your response...and no he is not in the hole for anything disiplanary...and I thought the same thing...why ship him from somewhere he had a bed to somewhere he wouldn't. It doesn't make any sense..but then not much of this does...again Thank-you

My son just got a letter from someone that just got sent to Calhoun recently. He said there is no room for anyone there. He and another guy that was with him got put in an isolation cell just to find a place for him. He said it is so crowded there are lots of fights. 10 people got locked down this week and he was glad to be locked up by himself. I can't understand the logic behind Georgia's state prison system. You would think after so much time they could come up with a better way to run the system but it just keeps getting worse.

Well more people are getting locked up than let out, thus the overcrowding. The prison I used to work at went from 1200 - 1500 inmates in the five years that I was there, but only created 182 new bedspaces.

Yeah my fiancee' also went to the hole when he was first brought there. But he was assigned a cell about two days later. They had a shake down and some of the inmates failed drug tests and so on so their rooms were given to newcomers. He pretty much keeps to himself and has saw a few fights in the month that he has been there. But so far no trouble his way. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I know what you mean. I told my son to stay away from the fights. That can only delay his parole. He hasn't been sent to diagnostics yet. Been in County 9 1/2 months now.

MORGAN — Georgia Corrections and Calhoun County officials celebrated Thursday the addition of a 192-bed dormitory at Calhoun State Prison but acknowledged that, besides prisoners, the 1994 facility has drawn little else to Calhoun County.
Building L is an “honors dorm” for prisoners who have shown good behavior or are mature in age, Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner James Donald said at a large gathering of corrections officials at the prison.
Calhoun State, which held approximately 1,230 inmates before the expansion, is a high-security prison for men convicted of serious crimes such as murder, rape and child molestation, with 232 inmates serving life sentences.
Building L is a medium- and mental-security unit of four “pods” of 48 bunks each, said Darryl Warren, manager of the unit. Construction began in February 2005; prisoners began moving into the unit in May.
“Bed space is always an issue,” said Warden Dannie Thompson, who hosted the event, but new beds “cost dollars.”
Building L is a part of Gov. Sonny Perdue’s “Fast Track” initiative, which added 6,000 new beds to the prison system while saving the state $2.11 million, according to a state press release.
Calhoun State also includes nine units of 46 two-bunk cells, 48 segregation/isolation cells and four other dormitories.
Georgia’s prison population of 60,000 added 21,000 last year but only released 18,000 — “three prisons’ worth,” Donald said.
Some 250-300 have recently entered the system each month on methamphetamine charges — “3,000 a year “on that one drug,” he said.
The group would later travel to Bainbridge, to dedicated a 192-bed addition at Bainbridge Probation and Substance Abuse Center, bringing its total to 384 at the center and adding 31 new staff.
Donald expressed his vision for more of Georgia’s prison population to work, as they do in Habersham County, where female state prisoners manufacture books of carpet swatches — “stretching the wire and putting a factory inside the wire,” he said.
More than 400 state inmates in other parts of the state work in the poultry industry, earning $8.50 an hour, he said.
For parents who ask how to keep their kids out of prison, Donald tells them “don’t give them anything,” or “at least make sure they participate in those Michael Jordan shoes.”
The new dorm requires 36 new personnel, increasing Calhoun State’s annual payroll by $1.3 million.
The good-paying jobs unfortunately aren’t bringing new residents to Calhoun County, more than half of its nearly 400 employees drive in from other counties each day to work, he said.
The original vision was for Calhoun State to have an “economic impact” on the rural county, Donald said.
Sources of “seed money” to construct housing for personnel have been studied, he said, “So you don’t have to commute over such an extended distance each day.”
A few staff members at the ceremony said they’d commuted from Dougherty, Lee and Randolph counties to work at the prison.
Morgan City Council member David Walters was one of a dozen elected officials present, including State Rep. Gerald Green, D-Cuthbert, who encouraged development of the prison when it opened in the early 1990s.
Walters said he had “not a problem in the world” with Calhoun State Prison.
“It’s a very well-managed facility,” Walters said.
The population of Morgan increased by only .4 percent from 2000-2005, to 1,470, which includes the more than 1,200 at the prison.
“We welcome people here,” and a community festival Saturday strives to do just that, he said.
