UniqNegra 08-22-2003, 09:41 AM Getting to the Correctional Facilities
This is a place where I would like people to post how to get to certain facilities that they have been to, how it was, like the clothing, the security, what you can bring, where they are coming from, how did they travel and so on. Also, someone who is looking for any of this information. I have been to Attica and Rickers Island from NYC. I am in the process of traveling to Upstate Correc. Fac. to see a loved one. Thanks to everyone. :fb:

Thruway (I-90)
West past Buffalo,
to Hamburg Exit 57,
to 75S
to Route 62S to Facility.
(from albany --Approximately 315 miles)
roc city girl 08-25-2003, 01:06 PM Actually to Gowanda/COLLINS u go the way Karensgirl say:
Thurway (I-90) West, past Buffalo, BUT it's way better that u pass the Hamburg exist and get off at the EDEN/ANGOLA exit 57A. U pay a 50 cent toll and once u get to that intersection u turn to the LEFT and drive like 10 minutes to another intersection at that light u turn RIGHT (thats Route 62 S) u drive for another 20 minutes or so and u are there. you will pass Collins 1st and Gowanda is right next door. from rochester ny its like 103 miles.
*Security sucks. there are alot of new Co's and they are constently in your face.
*Packages are 35 lbs max a max
*Visits work on an odd and even system, goes according to their din #
emilysimon 08-25-2003, 02:28 PM Wow! Those directions to Bedford read like a Saturday Night Live skit. How could anyone find that prison? I'd need a map reader, a directions reader, a compass, sleeping bags and a tent, just in case!
Good thing I only go to Clinton. Up Rt 87. Turn Right. I'm there!

UniqNegra 08-25-2003, 02:31 PM Does anybody know about Cavuga Correc. Facility? There's a wife looking for the directions.
UniqNegra 08-25-2003, 02:43 PM :fb: I am going by van to Upstate Correctional Facility in October. I am planning on using that umm brothers van service. I hear the buses are good, and they charge only $45.00. Hope everything goes well. Does anyone know how we can pay for a sure seat? And if they take cards, has anyone ever done that?
babyboy421 08-28-2003, 07:50 PM Hi I'm new to the PTO. My boy friend is currently serving time in Riverview correctional facility. I would like to know a bus service that goes there besides Prison Gap.

Bestway Coach Express: bestwaycoach.com there should be a # on the site and if u call they will give u a # to what buses go where and how much.
-Good Luck

UniqNegra 09-03-2003, 11:53 AM Lisa, as I had said previously, I'm taking that advice. I'm going to Upstate in October and i'm going with that bus service. So far from the looks of it I like it, I guess I will know when I go, and I will surely let you guys know!
ny026 09-06-2003, 11:12 AM i come from albany to gowanda, and it sucks! it is more than a 5 hour drive, and i haven't been able to see my brother as often as i want. it cost 70 dollars to for the visit. 20 in tolls, 30 in gas money... and 20 for food. because you guys know it cost like 10 bucks just for a piece of chesse and a few crackers. i also leave at 3 in the morning, and get back at 8 at night. it is so hard. any suggestions, let me know!
UniqNegra 09-10-2003, 04:44 PM hi ny026, i think you can ask roc city girl, i believe her man is in gowanda or was maybe she can help you.
roc city girl 09-10-2003, 10:40 PM NY026 My man is in GCF and i know it can be a little costly. I drive only 2 hours but still use like 20-30 on gas (now that gas went up AGAIN) but in tolls i spend $3.90 plus whatever on food. I am not sure how much the greyhound is but if u want to save a drive and go on even days for visits, contact me via Pm and maybe we can work something out, I live close to the greyohound station and the express way is right next to the station as well.
UniqNegra 09-11-2003, 01:41 PM Does anyone know how many visitors are allowed in Upstate Correctional Facility?
underpants 09-30-2003, 11:47 AM hi, i am going to attica soon, driving there from buffalo..... the yahoo map directions are kinda scary... a lot of Left - right - left for .07 miles, ya know? anyway, i'm not familiar w/ upstate NY at all, so if anyone has a simple way to get to attica correctional from downtown buffalo, PM me or post it here! thanks!
Jenuwine 09-30-2003, 02:31 PM Don't worry underpants, the directions aren't as bad as they sound. You'll be fine.
I've been to 4 prisons. Attica: Not too bad, weekend wait is horrendous. If you want to be in first on weekends get there before 6:30 in the morning (before the buses) to get a number. Sometimes it is better to wait though in order to get the "second" visiting room that is a little more laid back. Slow in calling people and processing you. Usually had to wait 30-60 minutes (sometimes longer) for hubby to come out.
Upstate: Long drive from anywhere. Quick at processing, food is reasonably priced, SHU inmates are in "cages" and VERY little contact can be made. Overall though it isn't too bad. Hubby was actually waiting for me when I got to the visiting room. Auburn: 5 guards (sometimes 1 or 2 less) to the visiting room because they cram everyone into one room normally instead of opening up the lower section. Food is over priced. Guards have a tendency to pick on you from time to time about contact. If they open the lower section 2 guards will watch that room. Aisles are small because of the amount of tables they crammed into the room. Great Meadow: Biggest complaint is the vending area (who was the brain behind this??) There are 6 or 7 vending machine crammed into a SMALL room with 2 microwaves. Squeezing in is almost impossible on weekends it is so crowded (I really can't explain how small this room is) There is normally a wait for the microwaves. Food is reasonably priced, condiments are rarely filled. Processing is relatively quick. (Anything compared to Attica is fast) Wait for your loved one isn't normally too long if they call him right away. Visiting room set up is kind of messed up the way they have it but it is do-able. Located near absolutely nothing. Always hit traffic at some point while travelling, especially near Lake George and on the Thru-way.
Overall, Attica has got to be the worst in being processed and waiting for your loved on to come out. In Attica you HAVE to clear the metal detector or you'll get a warning saying next time you won't be allowed in if you don't clear it. I had to be stripped searched on my Wedding day because of this. My buttons on my dress suit were metal (not thinking) and they took me into the bathroom with the wand and I had to remove clothing at the points where the wand went off.
roc city girl 09-30-2003, 07:11 PM Under pants, i am not sure if i told u before that the best way from Buffalo to Attica is jumping on the thurway 490 (i-90) EAST and get off at exit 48 which is the Attica exits. it wouldnt take u more than 45 minutes. Once in attica, u shouldnt take more than 1/2 to get the faciility itself.
