Dear community,

My name is Peter, a former US Marine, and now a graduating senior at the University of California Berkeley. I am hoping to reach out to military prisoners (former and current) and spouses (direct family members also) in order to address the difficulty that these men and women face throughout this process. The U.S. Military seems to neglect prisoners and their family members in areas of legal advice, family support/ programs, and much needed attention. I am asking if anyone would be interested in answering a few questions about this process for my main objectives:
1) Completing my research: Administration of Criminal Justice in U.S. Military Prisons. If published, this research may change the treatment, opportunities, and procedure of U.S. military prisoners before, during and after they are incarcerated.
2) Reaching out to communities associated to U.S. military prisoners facing difficult times and providing them information that is not readily accessible. Such as government sponsored programs, legal advice, and education/ employment opportunities usually unknown to prisoners and their families.
There is not a hoax or gimmick. I’m just a student willing to help those who might not be well-informed (and in the process writing about it!). It’s just about 13 questions about your experience. I was once in a position close to incarceration and looking back at it, I wish I knew what I know now. So, please help. It might just help you!

Thanks for your time,
Peter

What, exactly, are you looking for? Without more information, I'm not sure how your research is relevant to those of us with military inmates. We certainly appreciate any contribution of information and referral, though. Please explain a bit more about your objective.

there has been lots of published information to date on the current state of prisons, both military and civilian. Specifically, a Cox commission was done several years ago on military prisons and the UCMJ i think

and recently a overall prison condition study was done (not sure if it included military prisons) called Commission on Safety and Abuse in America's prisons.

Congress, which has the duty to look at that information and respond by making changes has not done a thing. they only do things that are politically positive. Even though making those changes would be beneficial to prisoners and citizens alike in the short and long run, the image that people get is "soft on prisoners" or "spending money on criminals" and things like that dont get approval let alone attention.

so, sorry, i doubt very much anything you might do would have an impact. those that need to know current conditons of prisons (outside of us, the loved ones) already do know and dont care to make changes. until such a time that the public is not so intent on vengeance and can see the benefit of education and rehab. and discipline can go hand in had with respect to prisoners.

people only convert once they go to prison or know a loved one there and even then they are jaded towards other crimes.

and I agree with Denada, your information would be more relevant to those who havent gone through court-martial. if you want to help, make it your goal to education young service members on their legal rights. even the playing field a little so to speak.

thanks for the offer anyway.

I sent him a PM and let him know it may be hard for him to get anyone to talk. He got back with me telling me of his study and I told him to send me a list of things he would be interested in knowing and I would concider answering. No Reply.

I think it would help if you posted the questions here in the forum for those who are interested
